    Kayak Suggestions?

Canoeing upstream It also depends what stream you are on. I fish at Harrisville and I can't get very far upstream on the Oswego in my 15' canoe, the water is too shallow and fast. On the Batsto, I can easily paddle far enough upstream to get a decent trip in since the water is deeper and...

    Trail running

Just in case there are any other runners on the site, I meet every other weekend or so with some friends to do a trail run. We've started from Atsion or Batsto and stick to dirt roads. There are also some nice roads in Winslow WMA that We've run. If interested, you can post or pm me if...

    bald eagle vs. pickerel

Great photo 46er! I've had Osprey fly over me with their catch while I'm surf fishing. One trip an Osprey caught a striper that he had trouble getting out of the water because of the size. He flew right over me, it was his way of saying "ha, ha, I caught something and you didn't".

State declares war against the voracious gypsy moth

I remember brushing the caterpillars off my tent before packing up, they were really bad. Do these things appear in cycles? They haven't been that bad for a while.

    Personal issue related to sweating

I guess I'll add my warning to the mix. I had something similar last year and I ignored it. Long story short, I ended up at the doctors with a very painful infection. I did find a powder that seems to work better, I think it's Zeo sport or Zeo sorb, something like that. I'll look when I get home...

    Bog Bodies

dangerous in the bogs Last month I took a walk behind Martha and was on some swampy areas that were frozen. I was testing the ground with my hiking stick and at one point it post holed in through the ice as far as I could reach. Had I gone through... I know better than to do that, especially...

So you're by yourself on your birthday?

Milestone birthday? With my upcoming 50th this fall, my brother and I were laughing yesterday about our (advanced) ages and remembering past hikes. I can't even remember turning 30, but I think I'll spend my 50th on the Batsto! :)

    Atison to Mullica Campsite

My brother and I did a half day hike from Atsion past Beaver Pond Sunday afternoon (4/2). Picked up a couple of ticks when I went off the trail, but otherwise not many bugs until evening. We saw a couple of back packers, maybe you were one of them? What a great day, the weather was perfect!

    GPS Purchase

gps question I'm not at all familiar with gps units. What is a ball park price for the units that have been mentioned here. Having been lost a few times in the woods, and really lost on one occasion, it's been something I'm considering. Thanks for any info.

    First Trip of Season

I get some funny looks deer hunting in camo waders, but it's the best thing I've tried for keeping ticks and chiggers off. I got mine at Dicks.

    First Trip of Season

Spring hike Welcome to the site. Batsto to Lower Forge is a nice hike. Along the cedar swamps is really a pleasant walk. I've done it before, in May or June. The swim at Lower Forge was a good way to end a hike. Water's a bit cold now though! I would also be interested in knowing if...

Up the Batsto White trail to the Forge, 3/26-27

Piney Boy, FYI I hiked both of those trails yesterday (3-20-06) all the way to where the Batona meets the river. The old fire cut (white trail) was just redone recently. You'll be walking in loose sand for awhile. I walked down in the swamp as often as I could.

    The "Mutha" of all cedars.

My brother and I had lunch last week in the swamp near Calico. We found some over 6' circumference and thought they were big. 9'-6" is HUGE. Cedar swamps are great places!

    Spring Peepers

Spring First, I started hearing peepers on Thursday night, what a great sound. Second, it could be worse. I actually had to umpire some of those little league games. Talk about hazardous duty!
