    ASNJ Meeting.

The last time I talked to Dan (he's my cousin), he described a lot about his job at the Batsto Mansion, but he didn't mention mansion tours. Maybe this is a special thing for the meeting. He did have a lot of interesting stories about the mansion, though.

Things that shouldn't be done in the Pines.

Does njpb ever meet as a group to have "clean up" trips? It might be a good way to meet like minded people. Plus, sometimes there too many soda & beer cans for one person (I know that's hard to believe).

    bear tracks

I've hiked in areas with significant Black Bear populations and seen trees scratched. The trees I saw were pretty well shredded, you couldn't miss it. The hand width and 4 to 12" long scratches is what I saw, but it was also the amount of tree damage that was pretty amazing. Seeing the results...

    bear tracks

A little off the subject of bears, but very wierd, a few years ago I was hiking with a friend in Winslow WMA and we found a very large animal killed and mutilated. There were no drag marks, it was much to big to drag anyway. Judging by the size we thought it was a steer, but it was hard to tell...

Trip on the East Creek or Manumuskin 2/25

Part of the East Creek trail used to be closed spring and summer because there was a nesting pair of Bald Eagles near it. I saw them one summer on East Creek Lake with 2 young. It's a beautiful trail. I hiked it a couple times with my oldest brother, who has since passed away (cancer) in 1997...

Bald eagle making its way off endangered list

I couldn't agree more that those of us who love the outdoors should be vigilant and involved. I remember the 70's and 80's, when you almost never saw an Osprey working the surf, or when the only Peregrin Falcon you could see was one hacked off a man made tower. To most New Jerseyians, a Bald...

    Snow Buntings or Cedar Waxwings

Cedar Waxwings I see Cedar Waxwings in my yard (Winslow Twp area), in a flowering crab apple tree. They eat the berries from the tree in the fall, and in the spring before the tree flowers. When they are around, there are dozens of them at the same time.

    Tuckerton Road

I just got a copy, so far it's very good. One question, though. Is the road passable for 2 wheel drive? I don't have 4WD, I have a 2WD Escape. Thanks

    old mining remains

When would they normally pump to flood the bogs? I went fishing at Harrisville Lake last September and tried to go up stream a little. The water level was pretty low, had to get out and pull the canoe a couple of times. (the water was nice though, felt really good).

Why are so many folks afraid of the pine barrens at night?

I've done some hiking other places (the Smokies, Appalachian trail in Virginia, Florida Everglades, etc..) all beautiful places. In the pines, though, I feel like I'm home. As far as being out in the pines at night, that's about as good as it gets.

Favorite time to go to the pines?

For hiking, I go out anytime in the fall, after the first good frost (otherwise the chiggers are really bad) until it warms up in the spring. Then I switch to my canoe. Even in August when it's hot, the water is the nicest to swim in. Lots of good swimming spots on the Batsto and Oswego.

    Chatsworth Club......

Thanks for the welcome. I've caught about the same, plus some small catfish, at Chatsworth. I put my canoe on it, you can see an old brick pillar on it's side, from the water at one spot. That's where I first noticed the bricks. Pretty interesting. Lately I've been fishing Batsto Lake or...

    Chatsworth Club......

I'm new and still looking around the website. Wow! I just looked at the post card of the Chatsworth Country Club (posted 11-14-2005 by Oriental), that place looked huge! I've fished Chatsworth Lake for years and often wondered what the scattered bricks were from.
