Turtle, the pines you found are in a nest. You should go back and observe each year and you will be find the female digging that nest and the young hatching out around now. Those babies should hang by that nest for a week or more. Nice finds

You can tell a real old one if the rattle is totally square at end and doesn't go to a taper. That snake is old very squared off.

Def wouldn't be a killdeer, they do feign like crazy but the habitat in the pines isn't right. I see them by more open areas, have never seen one in the pines that i can recall. Habitat isn't right for a woodcock either.
