    Oswego Kayak trip 7/4/06

4*4jim I really don't think swiit was trying to rub anything in. I think he was trying to help you out, many people don't know the laws of new jersey. Before coming to this site I did not know I couldn't pick up a turtle, lizard, etc. Thanks to this site I know not to pick up a turtle in...

    Backyard reptiles-not the pine barrens

Yeah unfortunately I did go to haddon heights, graduated in '99. As for haddon heights and barrington there isn't many critters. However, in haddon heights there is a pretty decent red fox pop, and I've turned up a few box turtles when I was much younger in canon park. Also behind woodland...

    Backyard reptiles-not the pine barrens

Well I've lived in my house for 25 years, never have I seen a reptile or amphibian. I live in barrington which has about zero areas for reptiles. So far this year I found a worm snake in my backyard, have a green frog and bullfrog that have made a home out of my pond. And two days ago found a...

Whales right off the shore at Seaside Park

This is a paragraph from www.njaudubon.com, I found it interesting that whales are coming back to some of their historic fishing grounds. Seems like wildlife in new jersey is really starting to come back, a credit to how resilent animals are. "A 40' HUMPBACK WHALE was in the Delaware Bay on...

    Tons of Snakes

I saw one summer tanager in cumberland county, and in my only trip to central pa this year I saw many pileated woodpeckers. I normally get to pa more, but my back has been to bad to hike steeper and harder terrain. Very nice pics.

Whales right off the shore at Seaside Park

That must be an incredible experience. I know a humpback was seen in the delaware bay a few months ago. Here is the link you might want to report that sighting to this website, https://www.njaudubon.org/Tools.Net/Sightings/NaturalHistory.aspx. When I use to surf I saw lots of dolphin and even...

    Possible bear encounter??

I guess they were deer then. My initial reaction was it sound like a horse galloping. Also there was a ton of scat a little further down where I found alot of box turtles. You can see the scat in one of the pics next to a box turtle. I was thinking bear based on the sound and the snorting...

    Some Encouragement

Nice pics, new camera? I've seen lots of fowlers toads, but no hognose yet. That the pine and kingsnake were the one's I wanted to find, I'm 2/3 of the ways there. If you guys are down in cumberland county let me know, I could show you some spots.

    Possible bear encounter??

thanks dave, very informative stuff. I have seen a couple bears in pa. The one that chased me was a mother with her cub next to a dumpster. Luckily, my dad and I had a 20 yard run back into the hotel, but she got pretty close to me. I really don't want another encounter with a bear to be honest.

    Possible bear encounter??

Thanks Guy, yeah turtles are my area of expertise. I'm trying to get better at finding the snakes so hopefully I will get some more pics of them. I found all those box turtles in an hour while it was raining. Rain stopped and no more boxies. Good news is in a very small area I have found 10...

    Possible bear encounter??

I was down in cumberland county yesterday around the millville area. After being in the woods about two hours I came across something which I believe was a bear. In a densely wooded area I heard a noise which was kind of like a hissing, snarl, breathing sound. I whistled and clapped my hands not...

    The weather

You guys must be getting hit with different weather then us. I thought this spring was the nicest in a long time. The last two weeks have been a little crappy between humidity and heat, but prior to that everything has been ok by me. I know up north you guys got hit with a few weekend storms...

    Eastern Kingsnake and others

This was my first time out in a little bit. It is just too hot out, I don't mind bugs but when it is like 90 and pine flies and ticks are attacking you it is just annoying. Also in this heat it seems like animals are out for a very small amount of time, and trying to find that exact time is...

    Eastern Kingsnake and others

Went to look for pine snakes this morning. Came up empty, so I went to my cant miss racer spot. There was no racer there but instead this guy which I was much happier to see. He was sitting under a bridge crossing a cedar stream. I realized after about five minutes why snakes like this spot when...

    Box Turtle today

Its more like floating, box turtles have an air pocket in their shell. It is kind of a safety mechanism built in. If they fall into a swamp, river, creek they will float and kind of paddle wherever they want to go after that. If you ever see one enter the water they go under water and...

    Box Turtle today

Jeff, sometimes they dig test holes. I've never really understood why they dig into the night seems like their exposing themselves to raccoons. As for her shell it could be stained from the cedar swamp, box turtles love to sit or bury into shallow mud. And the only time a box won't go into...
