    Snow on the way?

Yeah heavy ice here right now. That's the story across most of the western portion of Suffolk and Nassau, however it's in the mid 30s and raining across eastern Suffolk. So the pines are getting muddy, not white. The ground is white here in Nassau. But according to the news they were in...

    Snow on the way?

Raining and sleeting now with a temp of 24F. What's going on is courtesy of those warm ocean temps (still in the mid 50s east of Atlantic City) mid level warm air is riding above cold air at the surface, which means freezing rain. If we didn't have that summer weather back in Dec & Jan, this...

    Snow on the way?

You folks in NJ actually might get more than us on Long Island, they are saying because of the ocean influence things may change to rain here. I hope they are wrong, we haven't had any snow yet this winter (how strange is that?). It's been pretty cold all day, temps only reaching around 25...

    Composting in the pine barrens...

There seems to be new composting operations popping up here in the pine barrens on Long Island. When I was out last Friday at Robert Cushman Murphy preserve in Ridge, I could see huge steam clouds coming off a compost heap and the smell can really make you sick. It burns my nose and throat. I...

    Babesiosis

Global warming could also be a factor in the spread of these tropical diseases. And although I hate to bring it up, folks who enter this country illegally aren't checked and also spread disease. TB and Whooping Cough are coming back because of this.

    Cold WEATHER

Well I love the cold weather, since I dont have to worry about ticks and other bugs in the woods. Also, it means I dont get sweaty on hikes. Anything above 50 degrees and I sweat like a pig.

So what are you doing for Valentines Day?

Nah she aint french, I actually took a photo of her from the TV (with a camera...no TV screen capture utility here). She was in a movie, produced in the UK, about Stephen Hawking's early years, it aired on The Science Channel. Anyway she was his "girlfriend" (Jane Wilde) and stood by him even...

So what are you doing for Valentines Day?

Well the woman was from a TV show in the UK, so I dont even think she has heard of the pine barrens. I'm just using her an an example of the kind of lady I like, a sweet looking petite brunette. I would be more than glad to give a "tour" of the pines here, but I dont drive. I think a do pretty...

So what are you doing for Valentines Day?

So what is everyone planning to do with their "special someone". Unfortunately I dont have anyone, but if I did, it would be her... Anyway, for those that do have someone, don't waste your $$ on the usual fare (flowers, teddy bears, etc). Instead, why not show them...

    Babesiosis

Thats why I love this bitter cold weather. No ticks. Once it gets above freezing I make sure to only go on trails wide enough so I dont brush up against stuff.

    Frigid Friday at Panamoka Ponds

They're saying we might get more snow overnight, perhaps 1-3 inches.

    Frigid Friday at Panamoka Ponds

Last Friday, in that bitterly cold weather I was at the Panamoka Ponds in Ridge. The day started off with sunshine, so it was bearable... Clouds building on the horizon though meant the sun was about to go away soon..It was so cold the lakes have frozen. Clouds rolled started rolling on...

    Whats this?

I've seen those in Ridge at Robert Cushman park. I think they are to test groundwater, since Brookhaven National Labs are nearby and there has been some contamination there and they are keeping an eye in case it spreads. Also last month I saw some DOE folks testing the waters of the Peconic...

They want to build a power plant here?

More development in Yaphank, they want to build a power plant on pine barrens not too far from "Levy city". Here's a link to some photos of the sitehttp://www.yaphank.org/component/option,com_zoom/Itemid,95/catid,9/PageNo,1/ And a statement on the importance of these woods.... The Status of...

    warm weather

No sun here today, I was hoping for some sunshine tomorrow but the NWS dashed those hopes with mostly cloudy skies. Wednsday looks to be the best day in awhile, clear skies, sunshine, and temps remaining below freezing.

    Clash on Preservation Plan

The coastal plain ponds of Robert Cushman Murphy Park

Last week I took a walk in Robert Cushman Preserve out in Ridge. This preserve features many ponds. Much of these lands are only 20-30 feet above sea level. Rising water tables, a result of sea level rise, has resulted in many old paths now being flooded. This area has so much to offer in...

    Suffolk County at it again

BTW here is a satellite photo of the area, as you can see it is mostly woodland and farmland except for some county buildings.
