Gentle Reminder about the Image Gallery

What about the stuff that's already on there though? I have stuff from the LI Pine barrens, is it going to be deleted?

    Governor Corzine Crashes the Pines...Literally

If only he wore a seatbelt, he probably would have been back in a couple of days. Now who knows?

I think I'm falling in love

OK it's not the new Lucas Prata song but this really cute woman talks about a book writers thoughts on global warming. Some really eye opening stuff, just try not to get too distracted by those beautiful big brown eyes. The question is, would she join me for a hike in the piney woods...

    Some spotted turtles

Nice.. I wonder if there are turtles in the Long Island Pine barrens. I guess I have to look in wetland or marshy areas. I know we got snakes, I see shed skins all the time, but so far, no snake.

    pheasent sighting

I saw those once jump out ahead of me on a trail in Rocky Point. But by the time I had the camera out they were gone.:(

    Weird bug

Yeah I guess I'll go with that. Unusual place for a bee though, right on the curb on the road. Maybe it was in that position due to the cold weather. I would love to get some photos of turtles though, am I more likely to see them in low lying wetland areas or the upland dry pine forest? There is...

    Weird bug

I was thinking it might be a robber fly. They are large (this bug was 1.5-2 inches long) and look like bees. They also attack bees. This is the most similar photo I could find and it's a robber fly. A bumble bee. The bug I found didn't have stripes and was all yellow.

    Weird bug

I was in the woods today in Ridge, and while walking along side of the road something caught my eye. At first I thought it was a bee, but a closer look reveals it might be something else. A cross between a bee, a fly, and a beetle. What is it?

    Shamong Fires

Don't the pines peak in May when the candles (flowers) are present? So far I haven't seen any candles on the pines here. I think the pollen is from the dedicuous trees which have been budding.

Old Westhampton Path - a nearly 30 photo journey!

I don't know so much about forgotten towns, but there are ruins. The ones I know of a radio testing sites. The Rocky point DEC preserve used to be known as "Radio central", many buildings and antenna towers, most have been demolished, but there are some fallen tower remains if you know where to...

    Shamong Fires

Mr doctor still says to do that. It helps with ear wax blockage, but not fluid in the ears. So far it seems a combination of Claritan D and Tussin (cough syrup) seems to keep it from getting worse. I dont have pain or fever, so I don't think its an ear infection.

    Again Visiting The Hanover Stones

Nope, I dont eat ants, but I read it, I guess some folks eat them. I'm sure if Survivorman or Bear Grylls were stranded in the pine barrens they'd try to eat the ants. They do provide alot of protein from what I hear.:muffin:

Old Westhampton Path - a nearly 30 photo journey!

Yes, I used Google Earth. That loop I took is where I saw all the ant mounds.

Old Westhampton Path - a nearly 30 photo journey!

The path gets narrower as we leave county land and enter the state owned Sarnoff Preserve. The pines grow pretty tall over here. Nearing the end of the path soon. Bearing left will take you down to Wildwood Lake. There's a steep hill down, another sign this lake as formed by a...

Old Westhampton Path - a nearly 30 photo journey!

The shade of the dense pitch pine forest brings a more welcome relief from the sun, which is brutal in summer in the burn area. Things open up a bit as we approach a fork in the road, it is probably an opening created by hunters years ago. At the fork I bear left, then right as I enter...

Old Westhampton Path - a nearly 30 photo journey!

In this burn area north of route 27 the fire created a huge opening in the forest. The views are spectacular. Looking west and north toward the Manorville Hills, one feels like they are truly in the middle of nowhere! Perched on that small sand hill it's amazing how all those charred oak...

Old Westhampton Path - a nearly 30 photo journey!

This past Thursday I hiked Old Westhampton Path, which runs from Westhampton north to Wildwood Lake in Northampton, just south of Riverhead. It is about a 6 mile journey, but the northern half is quite hilly, while the southern quite flat. The path is paved as it runs past some horse stables...

    Again Visiting The Hanover Stones

Nope. Actually I did a little reading up, they are allegheny ant mounds. I saw these reddish brown ants crawling in and out of the mound. Don't touch or disturb the mounds though, these ants will bite, although not as painful as fire ants, these ants will agressively defend their mound. The...

    Again Visiting The Hanover Stones

Isn't it a little early for ticks? I always thought they were supposed to be more of a problem in by late April. Maybe the anamolously warm winter we had is the reason? I can tell you the pine flies are coming out though. Also saw some huge ant mounds in Westhampton. Here's a photo of one:

    Liar

Yeah I was abit pissed about that. I was gonna go to the Napeague pines in Montauk on Saturday, but instead of a nice sunny day with blue skies, there was alot of high clouds, with alot of aircraft contrails, so I didn't go. What happened was the high pressure system that was trying to build in...
