The Westhampton Pine Plains Friday Nov 3rd

Now that we're stuck in a junky weather pattern, I figure it would be a good time to get post some more photos of the woods. These were taken in the dwarf pine plains area in Westhampton, stunted pines, sugar sand included...

    Red Creek and Hubbard parklands

In Flanders sits one of the area's best kept secrets. Beyond the developed Southampton town park.. Lie the woods, as the trail draws you in.. And onto Old Squires Path toward ... Penny Pond...which has stands of rare Atlantic White Cedar!! More can be found in the new Red Creek and...

    Cranberry Bog County Park

It's a small park off route 63 in Riverhead. A short woods road leads you to the pond. This Pond was a former Cranberry Bog, hence it's name. I've heard if you look hard you can find wild cranberries growing, which can be eaten straight off the vine!

Connetquot SP Sat 11-4 (lots of photos!!)

Connetquot Part 3 Cordwood road runs through the more eastern section of the park. It is also the blue trail. Few people are seen walking through here, you're much more likely to see horse riders. Tall pines make this one of the more picturesque paths of the park: Heading north past...

Connetquot SP Sat 11-4 (lots of photos!!)

Connetquot Hike...Part 2 Now I am heading south along the red trail, pines intermingle with oaks.. I will be making a left onto the blue trail, which will take me through some beautiful wetlands in the southeastern portion of the park. Many of these streams are tea colored: Some are more...

Connetquot SP Sat 11-4 (lots of photos!!)

Will probably have to break this up in several posts, since I took so many photos I want to share. On Saturday, November 4th I set off on a LONG hike through the Connetquot State Woodlands here on Long Island. It must've been close to 11 miles. I started off in Lakeland County Park. Along the...

    Canon A630 or A640

I use the 5MP Canon A610 and it is a great camera. I think it can take adapters, though I haven't need to use one yet.

    Lakeland County Park

This past weekend with the beautiful weather we had I went to Lakeland County Park. It's just north of Connetquot State Park, and they are connected via the "greenbelt trail" and a bridge under the LIRR (sorta looks like those cow tunnels). They call it Lakeland as it is the headwaters of the...

Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge..open or not?

On Monday afternoon I went to the Wertheim Refuge in Shirley,NY. It is located where the Carmans River empties into the Great South Bay. The preserve features miles of woods roads to walk on, and combines upland oak/pine forest with wetlands. Through the woods I saw deer were running around...

Access:How do you feel about how good it is?

BTW here is what the fine folks in East Hills have to say about their park at www.villageofeasthills.com Overall, our crowning glory is the acquisition and construction of our 50-plus acre park. Officially opened on September 4, 2006, it is one of finest parks in Nassau County. After nine...

    Corzine rejects bear hunt

I apologize, I just couldn't resist joking around.:bear: I feel that the bears have had their habitat taken away by all the homebuilding. People move to the woods and then are freaked out by nature. At the same time I think Corzine made a mistake. Hunting is a celebration of human inginuity...

Access:How do you feel about how good it is?

I'm talking about access to woodlands. From what I hear, it sounds like plenty of land in the NJ Pine Barrens is accessible to the public, even by jeep (jeeps aren't allowed much on woods roads here on LI, except in WMA's where hunting is allowed, and you need a permit). I know the Forked River...

The "Nanny State" continues it's rampage on it's citizens

It's not as simple as just showing ID. You have to sign a logbook as well which is looked at by the local PD. You "government can save us" folks often say "if you've got nothing to hide, then what's the problem?". The problem is that slowly by slowly the quality of life for our citizens...

The "Nanny State" continues it's rampage on it's citizens

Dont you think it's silly that you have to show ID to buy a silly thing like medicine, but anyone can show up without ID AND VOTE? I refuse to have to give up my privacy just to buy some cold medicine!
