Just a few from Deer Park

Right smack in the middle of western central Suffolk lies the former Edgewood hospital property, now a DEC preserve. Proof that you don't always have to go out east to see some thick piney woods. There's this abandoned road that runs the length of the preserve, which is the best way to walk...

    Forked River Mountains

Yeah I'd probably need a car to get to Forked River, Double Trouble is a possibility too. I can do alot of walking though, I've had to walk several miles each way to get to some preserves here on Long Island. You do have to be careful roadside walking though. I did do a very long walk on a...

Why are so many folks afraid of the pine barrens at night?

Yeah man I totally agree. I can't stand crowded places and feel safer and more comfortable being alone in the piney woods. :guinness:

    Forked River Mountains

There is the 559 bus which runs along Rt.9. But are there any decent pine barrens preserves along that road? Or in Toms River?

    Forked River Mountains

I don't drive, however, so that's not good for me.

    Dodged a bullet last night....

Well the stiff, rigid pitch pine holds up pretty well in storms like these. We got hit hard on LI too, I didn't lose power but alot of people, mainly on the north shore, did. Alot of white pine trees (as usual) fell onto power lines in those areas. Another reason they should've planted pitch...

    Forked River Mountains

How do you get there? How long of a walk is it from US 9 and Lacey rd? Thats where the nearest bus stop (#559) is. I've managed to get quite a few places in LI's pines by public transportation, but I don't know if its possible in New Jersey. Does anyone has any other suggestions for nice pine...

    Snow in the Pines

SNOW in the LI Pines It's not alot, but we got some snow. Trails were easy to walk on, with just a light snow cover. But the roads were very icy.

    Snow in the Pines

Wow! We didn't get nearly as much snow here on Long Island. I was out in the pines today, there was maybe an inch or two on the ground and not much on the trees. We didn't get any of the heavy, wet snow. Heavy, wet snow is the best for the snow covered pines. I'm amazed everytime...

    This weather...

Looks like S.Jersey is getting hammering with THUNDERSTORMS tonight. It just keeps getting weirder, t-storms in January, nuts! The good news is this storm will be bringing a chill-down to the 30s for Sun & Mon, and if we're lucky, a few inches of snow!

    Long Island's Pine Barrens

Yes I am a hiker but never went in groups or led any hikes. However, the Hike LI (http://www.hike-li.com/) have hikes and tours of the pine barrens here on LI. This was one of the recent hikes listed on the Hike-LI site, from the LI greenbelt Trail Conference Sat. Dec. 31 - ROCKY POINT SHORT...

Have you seen or heard something you cant explain?

I can imagine a bunch of city girls driving around in the pines at night trying to get back to the city from the Hamptons and their big fancy Hummer runs out of gas. Their cell phones don't work, they walk around the vehicle on the sandy shoulder where pines reach out and then there's rusting in...

Why are so many folks afraid of the pine barrens at night?

I know in New Jersey there's the possibility of the "Jersey Devil", but here on Long Island, out in the pine barrens, it seems people have a similar aversion to even merely driving through the pine barrens at night. While I've never seen anything abnormal while I've been in the pine barrens...

Have you seen or heard something you cant explain?

From Rocky Point No, it's not bigfoot but a story I got from a mountain biker on usenet. Apparently some strange occurances going on in Rocky Point. I've personally never actually seen anything I could not explain, but there is a silence, a spirit of the land I feel whenever I'm in the piney...
