It's been a very warm winter, and I am not at all suprised. Spring is coming early this year. I do not like the bugs either. Hopefully next year we'll have a real winter, but it takes patience. As far as that "stinging insect", it could have been pine flies (aka deer flies) when they bite it hurts.

Probably the biggest expanse of undeveloped land here on Long Island, the Manorville Hills woods lies between Rt.51, Rt.111, and the LIE. One of LI's highest points, Bald Hill, also is here right off Rt.51 across from Suffolk Community College. Here's a photo of the view from NE of the Summit.

They are also known as inchworms, they hang from the trees in late spring/early summer. When I went on a hike in late May in Rocky Point last year they were all over the place hanging from those silk threads (webs) all over the woods. I'm not talking about just a few, but hundreds of thousands...

That's Brookhaven National Labs, an atomic particle accelerator. They crash tiny particles in there. The park is on the north side of RT25, BNL is on the south side.

Yes, it is Old Commack Rd. The entire length appears to be intact, with some pavement patches over the concrete here and there.
