I Got Chiggers on Saturday, and some crazy stinging insect

It's been a very warm winter, and I am not at all suprised. Spring is coming early this year. I do not like the bugs either. Hopefully next year we'll have a real winter, but it takes patience. As far as that "stinging insect", it could have been pine flies (aka deer flies) when they bite it hurts.

So you're by yourself on your birthday?

Well as usual, I was, when I turned 30 yesterday. My family is never there for me, and my parents are deceased. No girlfriend either. So instead I spent it with these guys. It was warm, dry, and the sky was that junky color it gets when it is warm. I sure do miss winter. Anyway, some photos I...

How's the rain situation down in South Jersey?

It's not good here on Long Island. We barely had any rain in March. New York broke it's record, now at .80'' of rain for the month. The woods are extremely dry here. It's so dry the sand (dust?) from the trails makes clouds as you walk and covers your shoes and pants. The ground litter (dead...

Pine flies are coming out early this year too. Unfortunately they seem to love DEET.

Weird electronic mishaps in the pines

Not once, but twice recently I was in the piney woods and perfectly good batteries just died. A couple of weeks ago I was listening to my walkman, two fresh AAA batteries, died without warning. Then this week, I was in Rocky Point and the freshly charged AA batteries in my camera just died. Good...

    Dwarf Pine plains

We are having some beautiful weather this weekend and of course I was out in the pines. These are some photos of what I like to call the "dwarf piney woods" in Westhampton,NY. Part of my hike took me through some burn areas as well, from the 1995 fires. Ironically we are under a red flag...

    Are the flies out yet?

I'm going into some piney woods tomorrow, here on Long Island though. Manorville Hills, LI's version of the Forked River mountains. Hopefully there won't be many flies.

    Are the flies out yet?

I wonder if those blood sucking pine flies have come back out today, it got into the 70s in alot of places. I imagine all the snow is gone after today.

    Saturday Snow Storm

I will be getting out to the pines alot within the next couple of days, that's for sure. Got an inch or so on the ground, moderate snow, and its starting to stick to the roads here on Long Island.

    Valentines Day in the pines?

It should be sunny and cold with lots of snow cover. Anyway for those of us who are single (ladies just dont dig me), the pines are a great place to forget about loneliness. Unlike at the mall or in busy public places, I dont have to see couples and be reminded I am alone. I never feel alone in...

    Manorville Hills

Probably the biggest expanse of undeveloped land here on Long Island, the Manorville Hills woods lies between Rt.51, Rt.111, and the LIE. One of LI's highest points, Bald Hill, also is here right off Rt.51 across from Suffolk Community College. Here's a photo of the view from NE of the Summit.

Favorite time to go to the pines?

They are also known as inchworms, they hang from the trees in late spring/early summer. When I went on a hike in late May in Rocky Point last year they were all over the place hanging from those silk threads (webs) all over the woods. I'm not talking about just a few, but hundreds of thousands...

Favorite time to go to the pines?

I wonder what everyone's favorite time of the year to go to the pines is? Mine is the fall and winter. Fall especially holds the best photographic opportunities, as the brilliant reds of the oaks along with the green of the pines makes for some beautiful color. Plus you have the trails covered...

Just a few from Deer Park

Yes, it is Old Commack Rd. The entire length appears to be intact, with some pavement patches over the concrete here and there.
