Anyone know what's up with these blue dog paw print signs?

Can you say about where you saw them on the trail? Best would be the nearest half-mile marker sign. I've been in contact with the Batona trail maintenance crew and they are NOT happy about these things.

Anyone know what's up with these blue dog paw print signs?

Thanks - good ideas. Could be... but it's a show for pre-schoolers. But there could be a connection. It's the most relevant thing so far. Thought so at first, but when I mapped the locations I've found - about 10 so far - it seems to be less of a route than just a series of locations. Nothing...

Anyone know what's up with these blue dog paw print signs?

These things started showing up on trails and sand roads around the end of January 2020. Most of them are a thin aluminum plate, fastened with 4 nails to a tree or post, and spray painted with a blue dog paw print. Sometimes there is no plate and they are sprayed directly onto something wood...

ATV riders taunted cops who busted huge, rowdy Pinelands party. That didn’t end well for them.

On State Park Service controlled lands, I think the actual rule is that licensed/registered motor vehicles can drive on any 'established public road'. Unless there are signs saying otherwise. I don't see where that is defined, but to me, 'established' means it was made for that purpose (which...

    Big burn today

Forest Fire Service FB page says: Bass River - Warren Grove Bombing Range

Annual forest fire mitigation program is underway in N.J.

They burned the North Shore Campground at Bass River State Forest this week. All 93 campsites are now crispy. I think they also did the cabin and shelter areas but I didn't make it out there. It's pretty amazing what they do, how they control it. Sharp edges between burnt areas and where they...

Another Pines Plains Hike !! UPDATE

First and second hike filled up (25 people each), and they added a 3rd hike, which also filled up, and even a few people on a waiting list. Same email list, I see Wharton is doing their Cutts Bogs Tabernacle hike 3 more times. It seems like once they started using govdelivery to publicize the...

Champion & Heritage Trees in NJ Calendar

About those calendars with the printing error: Forest Service just dropped the price of their "Champion and Heritage Trees" calendar by 50%, to $5 each. No word on the printing error; the price drop is probably because January is almost over and they have a lot unsold. They posted it to...

    Bass River Fire Tower proposal

You aren't the first person to ask about the names. ('Greg' in the letter is the State Firewarden / Chief of the Forest Fire Service, and 'Colin' owns, or co-owns the company doing the work.) I couldn't find any link between them, although I didn't look too hard. Also I think the project is...

Champion & Heritage Trees in NJ Calendar

Yes, she's correct. Oops... That must be embarrassing. June should start on Monday, and I'm pretty sure there aren't 2 June 7ths. Forest Service was notified, and we'll see how they respond. I think she should try to get her money back. Then ask for one of the free Pinelands Commission calendars...

Champion & Heritage Trees in NJ Calendar

Let's start over. The Forest Service produced a 2020 wall calendar, I think the title is Champion and Heritage Trees, like this thread title. Unlike the Pinelands Commission calendar, which is free, Forest Service wants $10 each. They are available for sale at some state park & forest offices...

Champion & Heritage Trees in NJ Calendar

Map or calendar? If calendar, I'll check Monday. They have a supply at the Bass River forest office, $10 each. (Price set by Forest Service.)

    Wharton SF adds acreage

I'm not 100% sure this is the same place, but probably is: Wharton has a winter hike planned for Sat Jan 18, 2020, from 1pm - 4pm. Free. Meeting location is "Cutts Bogs Property corner of Rte 532 and Patty Bowker Rd, in Tabernacle". Registration is required: call 609-561-0024 (that's the...

    Bass River Fire Tower proposal

More coverage in The Sandpaper dated today 1/8/2020 here: State Begins Forest Cutting for Fire Tower Can't let this quote go without corrections: "Part of the area to be cut is the popular 3.5-mile pink trail frequented by hikers in the state forest." 1) It's orange, not pink. 2) The trail was...

    Bass River Fire Tower proposal

The Press of Atlantic City, Sun 1/5/2020, front page: "Bass River State Forest - Tree cutting starts near fire tower". It's a good article. They got the answers to some of our questions above: Who got the contract? Who paid whom and how much? And more. I'm not posting a link to the article, or...

Not too late to plan to go on a 2020 First Day Hike

That's great. Hope you had a good time. I see Outdoors Club has some photos up on their meetup page. I was in a different part of Wharton today. Did you see the SNOW FALLING?

Not too late to plan to go on a 2020 First Day Hike

"The New Jersey State Park Service is hosting 29 hikes, 1 mountain bike ride, and 1 horseback ride in state parks, forests, and historic sites on News Years Day as part of America's State Parks First Day Hikes program." https://www.state.nj.us/dep/parksandforests/parks/first_day_hikes.html Hate...

    Bass River Fire Tower proposal

That's happened to me, and I don't like it. We advise people to wear orange during hunting season, then people think we're hunting because we are wearing orange. Maybe we need a new color to mean I'm not hunting but I want to be seen by hunters and not mistaken for a deer?

    Bass River Fire Tower proposal

Here is a machine he had on site before. Based on what 1Jerseydevil said, maybe this counts as a low ground pressure vehicle. Unlike the marshmaster, though, this thing cuts and removes trees. Up to a certain size, anyway.
