Have ticks always been a problem?

??? and a lot of fox squirrel (they look like monkeys). I have never seen a Fox Squirrel in Florida, and they do not look like a monkey. And, Lake Okeechobee is not the largest freshwater lake in the world, not by a long-shot. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fox_Squirrel

    Gems Landfill

? "But because of a drastic reduction in habitat and a change in the climate, about 70 percent of the species is now found exclusively in South Jersey." Can someone please explain this line to me? I am a little bit confused, and I don't mean to sound ugly, because I really love seeing this...

    My that's a large spider

I thought we were talking about spiders? That is one disgusting story, but I can do better. When I worked in health-care we would occasionally encounter patients at home who had big infected wounds, usually in the belly, that smelled bad and required care. Well, the flies just homed in on...

    Coyote puppies

Coyote Range I cannot site the specific references, I am sure someone can find a map somewhere showing the migration of the coyote out of its former range, but I have lived long enough to know that Coyotes ARE NOT INDIGENOUS to NJ. Their territory has spread from the west heading north, south...

    Batsto Africa, a PBX Hike

Yep! Yes Mark, I have seen that phenomenon as well. There is a definite conjugation of the iron electrolye mixing perhaps with a calcium deposit, perhaps leading to the leaching out you can see as an oxide as you mentioned. Now in saltwater you have sodium and chloride and a host of other...

Have ticks always been a problem?

Hmmm! How do you like that, I'll be! I have never seen a deer tick here in FL, but your map shows otherwise. I go protected either way, it just makes sense. Good info, Sue! Thanks!

    Bub's big fishing expo

Bass? How is the bass fishing in Lenape Lake? Pike? I lived in Malaga, a stones-throw away from Mays Landing, for nearly 10 years, and I never knew there was such a nice lake and park back in there.

    Bub's big fishing expo

Question Maxwell--I could see on Mapquest where you were fishing in Mays Landing. I fished the old railroad bridge 30 years ago. Tell me, have you or anyone you know ever fished Lake Lenape? I did not realize Atlantic County owns 2000 acres of pineland comprising the park adjacent to the lake...

Have ticks always been a problem?

Ticks in FL I have never seen Deer Ticks here, just Wood Ticks. There are a billion different kinds of insects here. I especially love the dragon flies and butterflies---never saw so many in my life! Camping, for me, is totally OUT this time of year here. Dec. to Feb. are the best...

Iron leaching? Is it possible the "oil slick" you are seeing is the result of methane from rotting organic material, escaping through the mud causing the oily rainbow appearance? I've seen this in marshland and areas where there's a lot of organic decomposition.

Legends and Lore: Pine Barrens (NJ) versus Hockomock Swamp (MA)

Hmmmm. My contention? As long as there have been people huddled around campfires in the woods for thousands of years, and human imaginations, and attempts to explain the unexplainable, there will always be legends and stories and "sacred places where spirits dwell". I have experienced such...
