Environmentalists seek to rein in ATVs amidst fears of damage to Gravelly Run

Oh wow! I used to hike Tumamoc Hill all the time. I'd link to a video i took going up it but alas it has disappeared from Utube! Let me see what else your map covers...I had no idea you'd map this part of the world too!

So awesome. I wish i was still able to go down there and explore some more using your maps, but... driving time Tucson, AZ to Chatsworth, NJ: 35 hr (2,383.4 mi)...not that I haven't already made that drive numerous times.

Environmentalists seek to rein in ATVs amidst fears of damage to Gravelly Run

Your maps are so awesome. I would have loved that and GPS back then. I was always looking at my compass and unfolding the big unwieldy (especially after I applied waterproofing to them!) geo survey maps.

Environmentalists seek to rein in ATVs amidst fears of damage to Gravelly Run

Boyd - I'm looking at the pond of water by where it says Warren Grove, off Simm Pl. Rd. I was probably st - I mean borrowing - some cranberries in a cranberry bog west of there - just like a handful really - and then when i got strafed I rather frantically drove looking for water to wash off...

"As I suspect you learned......." See, I told youse I'm smarter den I look! Amazing maps! All I used to have was old geological survey maps, some last updated 1941 or something. Maybe the pond by Warren Grove was the place i jumped in to wash off after that biplane strafed me with bug spray...

Thanks. Boyd. Is there a way to get the road names and town names to show up on your map because i'm not clear where i'm looking at, but I'm quite sure its an area i never went to. Add: Never mind - got it!

Environmentalists seek to rein in ATVs amidst fears of damage to Gravelly Run

I don't even know where gravel pits are. I guess I never went to that part of the Barrens. When was the last time I camped out in the Pines, over 10 ago - or was it 12 or 15? I forgot - one of my trips back east - but it was as peaceful as ever that night deep in the woods...except for some...

They didn't have ATV's in my days in the Barrens. It was so peaceful in there. They're out here in AZ too, all over the desert kicking up dust.

    john mcphees, the pine barrens

Post 30: I ordered that book from Ebay? I don't remember that either. What became of it. Do i have it buried here someplace? I've moved various times since then and a lot of things have disappeared, and i also used to trade in old books at the Bookmans...(I'm reading thru this whole thread)...

    john mcphees, the pine barrens

Yes, I believe that's the one. I never owned it but just looked through it years ago in a book store, I think. I don't know if it's really rare but i don't recall ever seeing it again. ADD: I did own it but I forgot!

Maybe someone objected to encouraging illegal camping, which actually is probably a good thing. I don't leave a trace, but you'd get people trashing the place and starting fires.

    Finding an Old Book

"Old Book" This thread brought to mind one of the unique places of now long gone America. Macdonalds book store was located in a very old factory building in an out of the way spot in the small town of Hudson NY. I was just talking about it. It had an enormous basement filled up with old...

    Kayaking on the Wading Again

Yeah that was really good, the last time I've been back east. I got caught right smack in the middle of Hurricane Sandy! Are the fire towers still there? If they are they must be all locked down. Years before I remember climbing up a fire tower in the Catskills mountains (Rip Van Winkle...

    Kayaking on the Wading Today

"kayaking as that's my hobby" Me too, or it was when i lived back east, canoeing (my favorite), sea kayaking. Since i lived in an apartment in Manhattan i had inflatable kayaks. I don't remember ever seeing any police in the barrens in the old days. I do remember once driving down to the PB...
