    Scuttle Hole

This is in the small section of the Calverton woods that is accessible to the public. It's a nice kettle hole, there's a trail around it and it has really steep inclines. I got 3 ticks on me though when walking around there. A sign of the lack of winter.

    A great opportunity wasted

The photo above is from Google Earth. This land is in Calverton, and would be a great hiking and nature opportunity. Sadly, only the southeastern corner (from Scuttle Hole on south) is available for the public to enjoy. The DEC owns that small piece of land, however, the larger area, including...

A few thoughts on the weather

You really have to wonder where December is. It was briefly cold on Friday and Saturday, but now things are back above normal again. This is certainly affecting the whole nation, as there really aint much cold air at all, and as we go into mid-December, with highs in the mid 50s each day (10...

    Colds

Yeah I caught another cold. I usually get 3-6 a year which is alot. I do take vitamin C, but I still catch them. I think I pick them up when I am in crowded places, and I have now started to wear a mask when the bus is crowded. It helps a little bit. And I always wash my hands. I've gotten alot...

    My 1st night shots

The full moon makes for some nice lighting conditions. These shots were taken in Riverhead a couple of nights ago.

    Thoughts on Riverhead

I just got done watching a show on time travel, well, it was a program about the thoeries on time travel. However, the "grandfather paradox" supposedly, would prevent time travelers from altering anything.. Anyway I come to think about the way Riverhead was, just 10 years ago. It was always a...

TV: Survivorman versus Man V Wild

I enjoy these outdoor shows they have on TV now. The 1st show came out a couple years ago on The Science Channel, featuring Les Stroud, called Survivorman. There were episodes in the Boreal Forest, The Canyonlands, The Arctic, The Rainforests of Costa Rica, and Mountains. This is one of the best...

Peconic Bog Preserve..so close but so far!

There's an interesting "little" preserve in Riverhead, along the southern banks of the Peconic River. It is a little known county land off state route 24, with route 25 on the north side. It is only a few minutes drive away from the insanity at Tanger Outlets and route 58. Definately a good...

The Westhampton Pine Plains Friday Nov 3rd

Now that we're stuck in a junky weather pattern, I figure it would be a good time to get post some more photos of the woods. These were taken in the dwarf pine plains area in Westhampton, stunted pines, sugar sand included...

    Red Creek and Hubbard parklands

In Flanders sits one of the area's best kept secrets. Beyond the developed Southampton town park.. Lie the woods, as the trail draws you in.. And onto Old Squires Path toward ... Penny Pond...which has stands of rare Atlantic White Cedar!! More can be found in the new Red Creek and...

    Cranberry Bog County Park

It's a small park off route 63 in Riverhead. A short woods road leads you to the pond. This Pond was a former Cranberry Bog, hence it's name. I've heard if you look hard you can find wild cranberries growing, which can be eaten straight off the vine!

Connetquot SP Sat 11-4 (lots of photos!!)

Will probably have to break this up in several posts, since I took so many photos I want to share. On Saturday, November 4th I set off on a LONG hike through the Connetquot State Woodlands here on Long Island. It must've been close to 11 miles. I started off in Lakeland County Park. Along the...

    Wildwood State Park

This is a park on the north shore of east-central Suffolk county. It mainly has a hardwood forest, with some beautiful views of Long Island Sound. For more photos, check out my Long Island gallery http://forums.njpinebarrens.com/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=372

    Lakeland County Park

This past weekend with the beautiful weather we had I went to Lakeland County Park. It's just north of Connetquot State Park, and they are connected via the "greenbelt trail" and a bridge under the LIRR (sorta looks like those cow tunnels). They call it Lakeland as it is the headwaters of the...

Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge..open or not?

On Monday afternoon I went to the Wertheim Refuge in Shirley,NY. It is located where the Carmans River empties into the Great South Bay. The preserve features miles of woods roads to walk on, and combines upland oak/pine forest with wetlands. Through the woods I saw deer were running around...

Access:How do you feel about how good it is?

I'm talking about access to woodlands. From what I hear, it sounds like plenty of land in the NJ Pine Barrens is accessible to the public, even by jeep (jeeps aren't allowed much on woods roads here on LI, except in WMA's where hunting is allowed, and you need a permit). I know the Forked River...

The "Nanny State" continues it's rampage on it's citizens

Recently I have been suffering with ear congestion and fluid, and my doctor told me to get Sudafed. But thanks to a new addition to the facist Patriot Act, you can no longer buy psudophedrine over the counter. Many drugstores don't carry it at all, and those that do, require a driver license...

An EYE opening show on LI's pinelands..

You can watch it on the net too http://www.pinebarrens.org/video-stream.asp All I can say is I can see why Mr.Amper had to give it to Steve Levy. Suffolk's county exec thinks because he is preserving twice as much as his predecssor, it makes him the almighty. But Suffolk is falling far short...

    Expressway through the pines??

Can you believe this?:siren: Despite concerns over its potential impact on the core Pine Barrens area, a proposal by local resident Thomas Muller to create a new exit on the Long Island Expressway and run a two-mile bypass through Pine Barrens woods to County Road 111, south of the "main...
