    Summer Daze in the Pines

Hope all is well with everyone here, its been a while since I've posted. Reason mainly is I haven't been out and about in NJ much this summer. I've kayaked the Wading and Mullica on several trips, but the summer usually pushes me into hiking the upper elevation in PA. I love the swamps in...

Anyone up for a Batona Thru Hike the week of August 18th?

Honestly, as much as I love the Pines I pretty much stay off the Batona in summer. Its just waaay to buggy for my taste. I'll be doing a 3 day Batona trip sometime in September, if you interested in coming out then drop a line. I like doing 12-14 mile days, beyond that I find the fun...

This isn't really about archaeology at all.

National Treasure...:jeffd: First let me say I am not against historical fiction, but they should at least throw in some factual information. The Schaara books on the Civil War, or Al Pacino's movie Revolution are both fun types of history for me. But when kids come into the Assembly Room...

This isn't really about archaeology at all.

When you wear a N.P.S. uniform in the city you get a litany of crazy questions and actions: No, that is The REAL Liberty Bell, the neon one in the Ball Park is modeled on the one your looking at (from a 13 year old) No, you may not hold this 18th century musket I'm holding right now. NO...

Or come visit me at Independence Hall, your friendly neigbor ranger:rolleyes: Its not only educational, but a hip area with center city and south street close by.

    Back to the Pines

I went almost four weeks ago, so I caught some really nice spring weather; days in the mid 70's nights in the 40's. The BFT is a buttkicker no doubt filled with lots of climbs, but the views are well worth the effort, one of the prettiest trails in PA. Also saw a ton of wildlife including...

    Mountain biking trails?

I'm pretty sure Brenden Byrne has a pretty long mt. bike trail.

    Daughter's first on river

Y'know, the "green bonding" I got as a kid from certain adults made me the avid hiker and environmentalist I am today. I think if more people found time to spend outdoors with kids we would be looking at a group of young people much more concerned with the future of the ecosystems surrounding...

    Back to the Pines

Hope all has been right with in the world for all of you over the last month or so. Most of my time has been spent in PA; Thunderswamp Trail, Black Forest, and the Billy Goat in MD. Highlight of recent outings for me was Trail Days in Damascus VA amid some rain and crazy hikers. Returned to...

    Bonnaroo

Bonnaroo is just a great time! Went last year and couldn't get over how organized it was for a group of humanity that big. I'm sure he'll have some fine memories of the event.

    Small town Piney makes good

Shame, shame, I know your name.. Sadly, after the last Bell attack 3 years ago rules had to be tightened for the objects safety. While it was never encouraged those who wished to were able to touch the Bell, but as T. Jefferson said; "If all men were angels there would be no need for...

    Small town Piney makes good

Sometimes big movie studios are mixed blessings. I like using history as a vehicle to teach the general public, but am sometimes skeptical about the way the message is sent. Real life is as good as any fiction, so it bothers me when history is bent for "storylines". I'd be lying if I were to...

    Small town Piney makes good

Well, its not so much as some moment of clarity or awakening, but more along the lines of feeling the stories of many involved with the Bell. For me, history is best told through stories of everyday people, from the ground up if you will. Its always been that way for me. Its the stories of Pass...

    Small town Piney makes good

I think the coolest thing is not the news, thats sort of regular with the Park and Bell, but the excellent pics the photographer sent me. I'll raise an infamy for a dubious:jd:

    Small town Piney makes good

Not to sound corny, but one of the reasons I got involved with a history career is because of the experience I had at the Bell and Hall as a kid. Its funny thinking back and looking were I am today.
