    Small town Piney makes good

I'm a conservation ranger with The National Park Service at Independence Hall. Part of my regular routine is to examine and dust the bell.

    Small town Piney makes good

Worked an overtime last night at the Liberty Bell Pavillion that got me some press coverage, anybody see me on channel 6 news using some conservation techniques on the Bell? Also have a piece in Thursdays Inquirer under the South Jersey section. Not a super big thing, but its nice to know when...

Anybody got some good outdoor plans this weekend

The Old Loggers Path is an excellent multi day hike with excellent vistas and doable terrain and climbs. Only complaint I have is that many of the best views are car accesible and thus open to partying yahoos that dont respect the site. I like the challenge of watching were I'm heading as the...

Anybody got some good outdoor plans this weekend

Nice trail that's in really good condition despite the heavy use. It was a buttkicker climbing Naval Run, 80 + degrees had me begging for relief. Excellent campsites with a variety of views and wildlife (a trapeze performing bear did his best to get into our "bear bag".) Overall, I prefer...

Friend bailed; Thoughts/feelings on solo backpacking?

WAMBA- Best way to buy gear, that doesn't have to be fitted, is online. Never buy a pack or boots without trying them first, but if you are looking for a rain poncho, purifier, etc, try campmor.com. Great site withloads of gear at discount prices.

    Pitcher plant

I love those plants, I went to check some out at Pakim Pond three weeks ago, but they were just buds. Guess if I went back now they would be up. Nice pic.

Tell me about it!!! A little game I play with my out of town friends it to actually try and point out every rock I do see in the Pines, .vs. the endless supply you face on PA trails.

I enjoy the elevation gain y'know? Rocks are just a PA hiking hazard. It does have a nice mix of wildlife and cascades though. The cascades are the highpoint.

Anybody got some good outdoor plans this weekend

I am ready to get out now, I'm like a cat on a leash I want to hit the trail so bad.:cat: My comrades and I are doing the Thunder Swamp Trail on the Pocono Plateau this weekend. Interesting counter to Pines swamps. If I remember correctly similar tree and plant life, but with some climbs...

    Archaeology Courses

No, I think your a fine barometer Ariadne. Who can better critique important aspects of a field than someone working in it. I find most folks with careers in history, anthro., or arch. are fascinated by the basics, thats why they precede on in certain fields. Even for the non-professional but...

    Archaeology Courses

In undergrad at the University of Delaware I took a few arch. classes and found them a great supplement for my career in History. The U.D. professors, as a whole, were not only knowledgable, but arranged for classes to get involved in dig and lab work. They also helped direct me to a summer...

Friend bailed; Thoughts/feelings on solo backpacking?

Piney -- Point noted. Is the Batona marked clearly enough that it's difficult to get lost? Or is getting lost a real possibility (i.e., are there lots of forks in the path that aren't marked)? While the Batona is clearely marked those unfamiliar with it may become confused at points were sand...

    camping trip

Wish I could go, but with a trip to the Pocono Plateau this weekend and a trip up to the Adirondacks next month my overnighters are all booked up. Will be dayhiking a bunch around the Pines though.

Friend bailed; Thoughts/feelings on solo backpacking?

Backpacking and hiking are two complete and different animals. Hiking by itself can be about simple dayhikes or weekend excursions, while backpacking intones and idea of spending a prolonged period in the woods; living, eating, walking. I have bp'd big sections of the A.T., PCT, and a huge...

Pine Barrens water safe to drink?

I was up at Apple Pie about 3 weeks ago and it looked like somebody had just cleaned, it was a pleasant change. Most times the same cant be said, that easy acess to vehicles leads to to many irresponsible parties. Every now and than there are sponsered events, me, I almost always pack out on...

Pine Barrens water safe to drink?

I didn't want to come across as a know it all holier than thou type, but my work with the National Park Service has shown me insights into many great areas that get abused out of ignorance and simple laziness. L.N.T is almost a mantra for me these days, and was in no way meant to imply that you...

Pine Barrens water safe to drink?

The Katadyn is great, I've been using the same one going on 10 years now and its still going strong. Wherever you decide to hike I wouldn't suggest drinking water straight from streams or creeks, bacteria lurk just about everywhere. Just some food for thought, camping outside of designated...
