    Hiking partner

If your looking for a hiking partner in the Pines or surrounding area I am available at times. I belong to a hiking group known as the MadAtlantic Yackpackers--We hike all over the NJ, PA, DE, WV area. Drop a line and I'll alert you when I'm getting out, or post something and see what happens.

Favorite time to go to the pines?

I'll hit the Pines hiking any season but summer. The undergrowth and small pest are really to much to take. I head for the Mts in summer. I do kayak in the Pines during the summer months though. I dont have a particular favorite season otherwise; Fall with its colors, the Spring croakers...

    hirst ponds preserve

While I'm not familiar with that particular site, the Nature Conservancy is a great organization. If you are interested in one of their locations give them a ring and they will be more than helpful. They dont have problems with people checking out locations, but they do want to know when and...

    Belleplaine State Forest-1/29/06

He had dirty blond hair that was all twisted and matted. Also had light facial hair. I think he reminded me of Shaggy from Scooby Doo fame:rofl:

    Belleplaine State Forest-1/29/06

Bellplaine State Forest 1/29/06 This was dayhike meant to test a foot injury, Belleplaine was a perfect choice with lowland pine forest, oak and white cedar making up for about 12 miles of easy flat trails. I hadn’t been there in over ten years so I thought a trip back was due. Nice area but...

    Wilderness Camping

I regularly hike and camp all through the Pines. While it is appealing to camp off designated campsites (stealth camping) it is illeagal. I'm no angel and have stealthed a few times in the past, but be really careful about using campfires. All designated areas have fire pits that make control...

Drinks at Toms River Fridays on 1/27?

I used to use a for-real typewriter in high school. Whats a typewriter? Happy B-Day Ben, health and happiness to you in the New Year!

Steer could still be roaming the Pines

Gotta say I'm routing for the steer. I mean, if he has escaped all of these attempts at capture he deserves his little piece of PineLands freedom.

    bear tracks

Its going to be hard to discourage bear from gravitating towards campgrounds. If they become a regular part of the Pines ecosystem than bear bags will have to be instituted, and probably should be now. I have had an encounter, and while it can certainly be a special experience, I really worry...

Things that shouldn't be done in the Pines.

Great topic for discussion, I wish there was a way to take it global. Perhaps more patrols from rangers, or at least more signage warning of hefty fines. Sadly, the Pines have no monopoly on blatant disregard for wetlands or the ever present garbage issue, last year in Assateague I watched in...

    the blue hole

Thats a good question Dave, I'd like to see the these Devil cathing traps.

    the blue hole

I never pictured aquatic eitheir, more like jabberwocky for me. That particular legend goes something like the Blue Hole is his grotto and entry point to some kind of nether plane. I think thats more modern invention though than actual legend.

    This weather...

I think most outdoorsy people enjoy a bit of cold weather. I love winter backpacking in cold weather;the crunch of snow, the exhalation of frozen breadth, the appreciation of a roaring fire, it all makes me feel so alive. I went out to Rickets Glen in PA the 1st week of December and it was...

    the blue hole

Odd this topic should come up so soon huh? I'm still not sure what to think of the BH. Lots of claims stating lots of different ideas, I think I like the one about it being the devils home:jd: Whatever it is, its an interesting place, last time I was there it was a royal mess, wonder if its...

    Dead Bear

That is more than a shame, its a crime. I will never understand how somebody could find such little value in a life that after shooting a subadult bear they would dump its body roadside. Somebody help me understand, is life worth so little? Looking back now, its makes me more than a little...

    Manumuskin Preserve

I lived in Fl. my Freshman Year of college, and while I came not to like year round warm weather I loved the Glades. Also did about half of the Florida Trail, nice length and some great wilderness sites. Have a great time back in the Pines.:jd:
