    Return to East Creek Trail

What a nice Saturday out and about. As before, the trail was flooded in about 5 places and required some off trail wanderings. What impressed me perhaps the most is the height of the Atlantic and White Cedar. They are the tallest of the Pines I think. I sat in the second Cedar swamp and...

Trip on the East Creek or Manumuskin 2/25

I agree. Traffic is definitely lighter down in that area, that alone is enough reason for me to stick to those trails for awhile.:)

I live right adjacent to hurfville crosskeys, and unfortunately it has really come under siege the last couple of years from development. Its unfortunate because it has always had some nice forested glades in the past.

Get well and we will plan another in the future. Feet injuries can be mighty serious, so take care. Joe

Thanks for more quality fishing hole info. I've spotted eagles in Penn State forest but knowwhere else in the Pines. Perhaps tomorrow will be different.

Trip on the East Creek or Manumuskin 2/25

Very interesting fact to hear about the eagles, didn't see any myself. The cedar swamps are definitely the highlight of this hike. They are just beautiful in the winter aren't they. I went out a few weeks ago and had such a nice hike that I'm bringing back somebody else. Only complaints are...

I'll have to remember that about the fishing, its been awhile but I plan on getting out a few times this year. Good thoughts for your friend.

I'm fast falling in love with that area myself. Have made a couple of jaunts over the last month with each one being better to the last. Dont like the swampy parts huh? Personally, outside of summer, I enjoy maneuvering through a swamps the most fun.

Trip on the East Creek or Manumuskin 2/25

All, Probably getting out with a newly made hiking friend this Saturday morning into the afternoon. My first thought is for the East Creek Trail in BellePlaine St. Forest. Was there recently and found it a blast. Its submerged in about 5 places, so a 7 miler turns into aprox 8-10. The swamp...

Dont know who you are as I have never seen you post here before, but apparently you have lots of problems with the pics I have listed. First, its to bad you cant appreciate anything outside of your little world. While I love the Pines, I also love the natural world in general, I guess you...

Jim, Looks like our wise administrator gave you the info on Jersey, I'll see about filling in the blanks for a National Park Ranger. First the NPS has a variety of rangers that do a variety of jobs. As much as I would love to be one, I am not a backcountry ranger. My current position is...

    Bear in Z Pines

Bear were introduce up north in NJ. Along the Appalachian Trail there is a heavy presence, saw two up there last year; one at Sun Fish Pond and another on the Stairway to Heaven Pass. Honestly, I worry more about upsetting a Northern Rattler than a black bear. Long as you give them there...

    Wilderness Camping

Don't know the exact reasoning with the State of NJ, but with National Park Service holdings car sleeping is illegal because of the occasional suicide and drug related issues that sometimes pop up with this. Perhaps its the same with the state, but I'm not sure.

Climb that soapbox my friend! Its about time the administration above us recognized the inherint value of the Pines and the Southern reaches of the State in general.

Its not neccesarily that the state doesn't have any money, its that it appears they dont want to spend in the PineLands or South Jersey for that matter. Most trail maintenance and protection appears to take place on the A.T. in the north, as well as northern parks. Every time I go to Penn...

Thanks for the kind words, and while my salary doesn't set the world on fire, it's definitely livable. Rangers in the NPS can earn a decent living today, trouble is trying to find the jobs. With the current administration there is a much greater push for Law Enforcement, and less for those...

I certainly didn't join the National Park Service for big bucks, but out of ideals and love of both cultural and natural resources. It is my job to protect them in any place I find them. I follow all park guidlines today, whether state or federal, not because of my position, but out of a care...

Rangers certainly are people too! I work as a ranger for the National Park Service out of the Philadelphia region. I Can't think of another organization I'd rather work for.
