Trip Report: Batsto to Lower Forge

Sitka is a great place, did you do any other parts of the Inside Passage or Alaska? I hiked throughout the Passage a few years ago and was blown away, Tongass Natl. Rainforest did it for especially.

Weird New Jersey = Dumb Daughter

In the pre-Wierd NJ days sights weren't as trespassed by the sheer numbers they are today. Kids read about some illeagal place and road trip to find it. In the past places generally stayed local with regards to trespassing, now they are inundated with it. For us it was places like Ancora, The...

Trip Report: Batsto to Lower Forge

Batsto to Lower Forge OR How to keep a fire in the Rain It was a nice Saturday morning. On my way to meet Lost Soul and Skinner at The Emiliano Carranza Memorial action seemed to be everywhere. Just...

    What Happened To Lower Forge?

The trees are alive but burned, along with all the brush. It really is quite an ungainly sight. Interesting about the Hapkido, years and years ago I took GoJu-Ru and I'll never forget what great shape it had me in as well as centered in life.

    What Happened To Lower Forge?

Hey Dargo, I found a pick of Lower Forge from last Fall for you. It was real nice set off the trees. The area pictured got caught in the burn.

    What Happened To Lower Forge?

Thats interesting, what style of martial arts is hapkido? Careful with the foot than, even seven miles can put the big hurt on an already injured foot. I sectional hiked the A.T. in Maryland a couple of years ago, and instead of treating a foot injury and getting off the trail I thought I...

    What Happened To Lower Forge?

Batsto to the Mullica River Wilderness Site is like 7 miles. Most of it is sand mixed with a tiny bit of green highway and a couple plank crossings. Personally, I think the way up to Lower Forge is a bit of a nicer hike, but I dont know if thats true with current conditions. The camp is nice...

    What Happened To Lower Forge?

I think I took some pics, let me check when I get home today. Maybe think about heading up the Mullica River Wilderness and staying at that camp. Its on the water, has a pump, and is probably a better choice with the state of Lower Forge.

    What Happened To Lower Forge?

Yeah, we stayed there anyway. We got there about 130, set up camp, and explored some of the trails that extend out from there. Didn't want to stay at Batona, and by decision time it started to rain so we just hunkered down.

    What Happened To Lower Forge?

I agree that clearing out volatile underbrush and other fuel is important, I just think at a popular campsite they could have been more user friendly. You can clear without that burn, and while it is certainly going to take more time it will make it easier on the campsite user. In the very...

    What Happened To Lower Forge?

So I went on an overnighter this weekend, the hiking was nice and the weather was not. My question though is when did a controled burn happen at Lower Forge, I mean it looks just awful. I could be wrong, but with the look of the burn pattern I'm pretty sure it was controled. With the nice...

    First Trip of Season

I'm pretty excited about my planner this year. I'm doing Rickets Glen and The West Rim Trail, both in PA, for 4 dayers. My big one is The Wonderland Trail at that circles Mt. Ranier. I'm doing that as a two week excursion in September. Possibly back to The Dolly Sods Wilderness in WV to...

    First Trip of Season

Good for you! Backpacking is a way of life for many people, inlcuding myself. I find very few things in life as satisfying as hiking across a ridge to summit some peak, or cross some Pine Lands swamp. Some people go to church, I go to the woods.:) First rule is to always hike your own...

Up the Batsto White trail to the Forge, 3/26-27

Hey Tom, Actually I'm thinking of the trail that runs adjacent to the Batona. I find that running straight up the Batona out of Batsto lacks the view of the white trail. Its an old fireline that runs right against the Mullica. Depending on how cold it is though I may change my tune. If it...

Up the Batsto White trail to the Forge, 3/26-27

Folks, Some backpackers friends and I will be hiking up the Mullica to Lower Forge Saturday. Sunday hiking out to the Carranza Memorial. I was thinking of trying to incorporate the plains in this, but not sure with time constraints. Most likely 8 miles up and 6-7 out. Anybody interested drop...

    hammock camping

A friend of mine swears by the Hennesy. I've borrowed and used it on a couple of occasions. Light weight, off the ground, water resistant. Only complaint was that I got tangled getting out once. For extended packing trips though that thing is great.
