    Earthquake?

I think we just had an earthquake here. It shook my house very noticeably, could feel floor shake, walls shook, the table actually rocked back and forth! Was listening to the financial news on the radio from NYC and they also mentioned it . Wow, that's about the strongest one I've ever felt in...

    Farewell to Borders

This is a shame, but not a big surprise. The Borders at Hamilton Mall was the only large book store near me. Now I would have to drive 40 miles to get to the closest Barnes and Noble, and I wonder whether they will eventually meet the same fate anyway...

Time to check your sump pump

According to the NWS, we have the potential for over 2" of rain during the next 24 hours. It's been dry down here, so I'm kind of looking forward to this (don't have a basement and live on higher ground). But getting two inches in less than an hour could be a problem for just about everyone...

Garmin BirdsEye now offers USGS topo's

This is nice, since it lets you load USGS 24k maps for the whole state, unlike the "custom maps" that I've posted that are limited to about 20x20 miles. Separate subscription from the aerial imagery though, so you need to spend $30. https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=255&pID=98816

    Feb 17, 2011: 75 degrees and sunny

Unbelievable - that's what my porch thermometer says and it is short sleeve weather here. The whole way home from Philadelphia on the Expressway the air temperature was showing 69 degrees. Enjoy it while you can - hope that others have a chance to get outside for a bit also!

LIDAR in the Pines - very cool

With a little time to kick back during the holidays, I'm finally checking out something pretty cool from the USGS - 1/9 arc-second LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) radar elevation data. This is very high resolution imagery (about 10 feet per pixel) that shows the surface of the earth with...

A virtual drive through the pines

NJDEP recently posted new land use/land cover (LU/LC) data and I've been spending the past few weeks with it. They created this dataset by tracing outlines of features on the 2007 aerials and assigning special codes to them. When combined with my own secret sauce, the result is closer to an art...
