Yeah, they grow mosquitos pretty big in the Pines. Some people have a good tolerance for them - unfortunately I'm not one of them. The bugs tend to keep me out of the woods this time of year.
It'd probably be more convenient to have the forge and furnace powered from the same source. That way there's only one dam to maintain, and you don't have to go through a lot of expense and effort to get material from the furnace over to the forge.

Gabe, it appears that you are correct. According to Carl Woodward in Ploughs and Politicks a large forge of four fires and two hammers was built at Atsion in 1767-1768. The forge worked bog iron from Batsto into bar iron.

The Cranberry Trail at Brendan Byrne might work out well for a stroller. It's handicap accessible, so it's either paved, packed dirt, or a boardwalk. It's only 2.7 miles long, though.
