    How much would it take....

I don't have a fear of heights but those high-rise building below the spire look rather small! I remember watching a video similar to this, where two men were changing lights or inspecting wires on a radio antenna and I thought how incredible it was for them to be free climbing at those extreme...

    Botany

That Pine Barren heather is something to see when a broad open area of it is in bloom. All that yellow just cheers you up for some reason.:)

My first Orchid of the season

Thanks Oji! I was looking in the native area along the old reclaimed farm field by the Rancocas. The leaf littered hard wood muck area back by the waterhole to be specific.

My first Orchid of the season

Has anyone seen Isotria emerging or in bloom? I found a large population of Downey's with few yet to be identified orchids growing in between the silver-veined plants. They may be lady's slippers. Hopefully the two existing flowers are part of a trinity and the third piece of the triad is the...

    Bee colonies are collapsing

But of course it is Admiral John Byng! I was reading Voltaire's "Candide" at the time and enjoyed the quote.

    Bee colonies are collapsing

From what I have read, and can't seem to find the study, the colonies that are collapsing are the genetic engineered bees, while the natural bees don't seem to be effected. There was a relationship between the size of the bees, the size of the hive cells and CCD. The much small natural bees seem...

    PowerPot

46er, you don't have to charge the battery all at once. Do some here and do some there.:D -Honestly, I like both of them but was just offering an alternative. There are only three choices for the most part: solar, hand cranked or hot water generator. Pick the one that suits your needs and budget.

    PowerPot

If absolutely have to have your gizmos with you that need batteries, just get a hand crank charger. It is so much easier to carry. A little elbow grease is all you need. http://www.k-tor.com/hand-crank-generator/

Red, you did the right thing by rescuing that dog. He is a handsome bowlegged dog and he appears affectionate!

    Frost Warning Tonight

I have been in that position before and can relate to her suffering. It was a September canoe trip by Dingmans Ferry. It was in the mid eighties during the day and dropped below freezing by the early morning. I was miserable and practically slept on the coals. We were all caught off guard that...

    Frost Warning Tonight

I enjoy waking up to mornings like the one you are describing while camping! It is the combination of being asleep in a toasty sleeping bag and taking in the chilled air that is recharging. I may be a kook for thinking this way, but I still like it.

Showy orchis (Galearis spectabilis) early this morning.

    Water Filters?

I like that Sawyer thought about how fast organic matter clogs the filter and actually came up with a simple solution to purge the system. The MSR can be a pain to backwash in the field. I have used coffee filters as a pre-filter to help keep the internal pre-filter clean on the Sweetwater.

    Water Filters?

I have used a MSR Sweetwater filter for several years, right along side iodine and other water treatment drops, such as Aquamira. I was looking to maybe replace my older MSR pump with something new, maybe the Miniworks, when I came across the OKO filter. Interesting, but none the less, I was...
