    Whitesbog this morning

Doug, keep a sharp look out in the coming months. The rarities on the grounds of Whitesbog will be revealing themselves. Please keep your posting your photographs! I have enjoyed each and every one of them.;) BTW- I was the fellow in the white van that gave you a friendly hello last week...

    Garden Stae Parkway or 444

I always get a puzzled look, from out of towners, when I have to give them directions to the turnpike. It is difficult to explain the 95s. North of Route 1 is 95. South of Route 1 is 295. East of 295 but south of route 1 is 195. West of 295 and south of Route 1 is I29. However if you take 95...

    something gross in my garden

Stiz, what you have pictures in your bed is slime mold. It may be Fuligo septica(?). The mold usually appears after very wet, warm weather during the late Spring and through out the Summer. It is harmless and is something that appears on decomposing mulch. Wait until you see Stinkhorn and the...

    Bass River SF Question

I was in Bass River for a few hours this afternoon. The flies and ticks are definitely out, but no more than usual. I had quite a few nymphs on my legs but the Sawyers took care of them. I came across them in the tall grasses off of the trails. Bass River is one of my favorite areas because I...

    finally... moved to the pines

Stiz, I have had great luck controlling ants with Terro liquid baits. You can also use the homemade mixture of Borax soap and sugar to poison them as well. Unfortunately the process takes several days with either of the baits.

    Biking in the Pines

Ben get yourself a set of crossover tires and you can ride most of the hardpack paths and roads. You can still ride on the road if you purchase a less aggressive lug and not be dragged down the design of the tire. Stop by Jay's on Nassau Street on your lunch break. I think they may have a demo...

Most have heard of the AT

To all - what has been the longest distance you have hiked the AP? I hiked from Bear Mountain, NY to the Wind Gap, Pa in the summer of '88. My friends and I did it in a very leisurely ten days (I understand it can be done in six days if everything goes right). The distance hiked was around a...

My first Orchid of the season

Yes he did! I need to pay Dot and Brooks a visit soon. It seems everyone who I meet that is involved with the Pine Barrens, in some shape or form, are all great people. It speaks volumes about the atmosphere the land creates.

My first Orchid of the season

It was very dark under the canopy of the trees and the cloudy sky. Anyhoo, this is what I came across.

My first Orchid of the season

Teegate, the Camas should have the appearance of a day lily at this time of year. I am quite sure that is what I found, but I won't have confirmation until I see it in bloom.

My first Orchid of the season

Teegate, the Dragon's Mouth looks terrific with the morning dew on it. I found a large stand of Arethusa along the Tulpe but in a different location than what you showed me last year. There are at least fifty plants in one local area and many more spreading from that central "core". These where...

    Lakehurst, home of multiple forges?

Ryan, I have seen some slag by the dam. I have never searched the area for signs of a forge or raceway. There are some very cool relics from the railroad and from the farm that was nearby! Charles Boyer's book "Early Forges and Furnaces in New Jersey" may be of some help too. It is a great...
