DEP Announces Virtual Public Meeting to Launch Wharton State Forest Visitor and Vehicle Use Survey

You would think this meeting for public comment would be along the lines of: "We're thinking of implementing a permit system. Join us to discuss this plan." Instead it seems to be: "We have decided to implement a permit system. Join to watch us decide which roads will be considered in-scope for...

DEP Announces Virtual Public Meeting to Launch Wharton State Forest Visitor and Vehicle Use Survey

Referring to this paragraph. Makes it sound like a foregone conclusion, at least for Wharton:

So I guess it is confirmed, then - they are going to implement a permit system.

Yes, finally a little bit came through, although it was all over very fast.

    Morning Fog

Some more fog this morning as well. And yet, still no rain.

    Morning Fog

Out driving around early this morning. Nobody around at Batsto. Saw one Forestry Service employee. Quick stop at Franklin Parker. Harassed by pine flies and the humidity is ridiculous, but worth it.

    Surprise at Pakim Pond

How's this for a hair-raiser: Of course, this guy was as dead as a doornail. Otherwise I'd never have got this close for a photo. When I arrived at Pakim this afternoon, Forestry Service guys were all gathered around looking at it. It had a crushed neck - seems like someone may have ran it...

    Fire Ecology in the Pines

So is a potential solution just more controlled burns? Why are they letting some of these remote areas go without burning for so long? Is it just too difficult/expensive/ecologically damaging to set up fire breaks in some of these places? I would think the ecological damage from the total lack...

    Tax Parcel Website

Interesting, the law referenced (Daniel's Law) only relates to redaction of information of some covered classes of people (law enforcement, judges, etc) from state-owned websites. But it looks like they've taken a much broader approach and just redacted everyone's information? I suppose that...

    Fix Our Parks

If anyone's interested, the most recent episode of the Pinelands Podcast (a production of the PPA) is on the subject of Fix Our Parks and the Mullica River Fire. I'm not endorsing any particular opinion shared on this show but I do enjoy these episodes, so I thought I would share.

    Fix Our Parks

I wouldn't like to see drone use, for the same stated reasons it's restricted for regular civilians (interference with wildlife). But why not regular old cameras? It seems like it should be easy to strategically place some motion-activated cameras at the most commonly-used ingress points and...

    Meteors! (was: René-Levasseur Island)

As a kid, I had always heard that the Blue Hole was made by a micro-meteor impact, but I think this is pretty firmly in Jersey urban legend territory. As far as actual impact sites, Toms Canyon crater is about 100 miles east of Atlantic City and is probably the closest one to us. It is probably...

Okay, having a picnic is cool and all....but in the middle of a pine trail?! LOL!

The beverage is Brooklyn Crafted Mango Ginger Beer. Maybe some kind of bizarre mukbang video production out in the woods? It looks like there's a piece of paper with writing on it, did you look at that?

    Lawrence Line Survey

If it interests anyone, here is a quick scan of a frontispiece map from the 1962 book Old Inns and Taverns in West Jersey showing the entire partition. The book says it was drawn by a Mr. Harry Marvin of Mullica Hill. I don't know which line(s) this is based upon though. The book does not say...

Crews Battling Wildfire Along Mullica River in South Jersey’s Wharton State Forest

I'm borrowing an F-150 but with the rain it's probably better to not attempt it today and end up getting stuck on a closed road. I'm sure the authorities would not appreciate that. I have some other sites to hit anyway - I can come back here another time.
