    Another 5AM outing

Manumuskin, here is another link that is very useful for plants. This specific link happens to be for sedges, but the website covers everything. Prepare for sensory overload...

My first Orchid of the season

A detailed close up of one of the orchids from yesterday (above). The fringe can clearly be seen.

    Another 5AM outing

I'm thinking some form of sedge or rush for the pink flower. - It is the bristles mixed in with the anthers to why I am thinking it is one of these, plus no nodes.

    Another 5AM outing

It was a nice morning to be up and out early. The Yellow Fringed orchid looks like fungus attacked it.

My first Orchid of the season

I spent the morning hunting for showy flowers and on my way home, I laughed out loud, where and when I found these White Fringed orchids (Habenaria blephariglottis).

My first Orchid of the season

Manumuskin, I think it is a Green Woodlands orchid (Habenaria clavellata). I won't know for sure until it opens. I am sure other members here already know what is pictured.;) I have only just started to learn about orchids that grow in the Barrens. It hasn't even been a year since I have been...

My first Orchid of the season

Almost.... - A question about an observation, for those who have been in areas where Barren orchids grow, and I will try to ask in "code". The preferred habitat of the native orchids is transitional areas with filtered sunlight and "rich" soil?

Yes, I just missed you. I was back along Lost Lane and Beaver Dam Rd to sometime around noon. There are interesting cedar swamps in both areas.

    Pickerings Morning Glory

It was nice to find several plants today, at different locations. They seem to enjoy the driest, most barren, deep sand that they can sink their roots into and inches away from danger. Endangered should be changed to imperiled.

My first Orchid of the season

Very cool, Teegate! I might of just missed you this morning. I was scouting nearby in Penn. I saw a plane similar looking parked on the sand runway up the road, next to the building with the windsock.

    Here comes the hot weather

Nasty gust front on the incoming storm! Keep a watchful eye out for trees damaged from last week. The storm is hitting the greater Trenton area now and it is blowing hard. Lots of lightning!

    The Aserdaten Tract Location

There might be something of interest here - a road ending in three sections next to a swamp. www.historicaerials.com/aerials.php?scale=3&lon=-74.62034991320313&lat=39.69764160882496&year=1951

    The List

The first on my list is the bushwacking drive for all of what the Barrens have to discover - flora, fauna, history, and treasures. All while having great time and not passing up an opportunity to have fun climbing a tree for a better view or a swing into cool cedar water.;) My bag has the same...

    The Aserdaten Tract Location

I was thinking the same. North-west from Batsto could be another option. -Thanks, Wrangleboro! I was responding to Teegate and didn't see your response.

Wrangleboro, do you recall the name of the swamp that the tract was located in?

Scenic detour between New Egypt/Long Beach Island?

Make sure that you stay on Hawkins Road when traveling past the Bomarc Base. If you are between 539 and Hawkins Road, especially near the fenced-in area , a ticket or tickets will be issued. The Joint Base has had enough with trespassers and scavengers entering the buildings. I was riding a...

    Vintage Sawmill Image

A very interesting video that adds motion to Jerseyman's postcard. Some modern equipment has been added to the sawmill, but the majority of it is an antique. It is great to to see the gentlemen involving the youngsters with operation of the tractors. Enjoy the sounds! Thanks Jerseyman! It is a...
