The Batona trail goes through a bunch of different topos. You can buy topos at the ranger station for $5 each. You can also look at them online at http://maps.njpinebarrens.com

For a hand winch, just get the biggest rated one they have in Home Depot. Also, familiarize yourself with how it works before you need to use it. As for tow hooks, you should get a set installed in the front, and either a single hook in the back or a receiver hitch. Personally, I'd get a...

When you get a strap get one WITHOUT the metal hooks on the end. They're dangerous if the strap becomes undone or breaks.

The Road to Locke's bridge is not a narrow road, but it's incredibly soft sand in parts, especially around the bridge site. You'll want to have 4WD on for that. I went there in my old Grand Cherokee so you should not have a problem in your Libby.

    New GPS from DeLorme

The problem with PDA based GPS's is that the battery life is atrocious. The iQue that I had was probably one of the worst GPS's I've ever used. I want a unit that will run on 2 x AA batteries and last for a few hours.

PIAA is a light company. They make aftermarket racing and off-road lights. Sort of like Hella, but less German. http://www.piaa.com/

You shouldn't really ever need to use 4-LO for anything in the Pines. You'd need it if (maybe) you got stuck or if you were pulling someone who got stuck out. 4 HI is where you want to be, and honestly only if you need it. I find I can get around pretty well in 2WD.

I'm not feeling the ballast theory. I'm also not feeling the "didn't pass QC so it was dumped overboard" either. I don't think bad castings would have made it out of the furnace, and even if they did get to the boat, it's not likely they would have left land. If it did get on the ship, it's not...
