Halloween at Maurice River Bluffs Preserve

Al, I went to the local community college for a course on keyboarding when I was 54 years old. A real game changer for me. You can learn this at any age.

    Ticks & Chiggers--a study

The photo of that red creature looks doctored. How can they be that big and yet not noticed on your skin (as people say)?

    Raised trail?

Are you sure you saw the entire document? You have to go to the museum for that. I think it says 'in 3 folders'.

Top chef reveals secret spots in N.J. forests where he finds rare mushrooms in new film

That mulberry and steak looks good. I see he's picking dangleberries, which in my opinion have very little flavor. But, whatever, I like his ingenuity.

    Pinelands Fishing sites recommendations.

Bamber has both bass and pickerel. Speaking of Bass, this secret spot behind the old waretown dump is bassy. This is my son from about 12 years ago out there.

It's likely easier for us to ask you what you already do know about the places to fish in the pines.

    Raised trail?

This is the link to info about the Dover Forge records. I have yet to see them. http://7005.sydneyplus.com/final/FindingAid.aspx?template=Collection&initial=02bafe0e-5b55-4fef-9bc0-f0e579d78600&lang=en-US

    Raised trail?

And note how using the slope map, there is a steep portion. Maybe this is just showing the slope of the berm side where they built it up.

    Raised trail?

I wondered the same thing, because it appears to be. Maybe it is, but perhaps they gave it a gentle slope too by building it a bit thicker at the base. I can see that slope area in my mind; heavy on the mountain laurel, inkberry holly, maybe a pine, dangleberry, and greenbriar. At the bottom...

    Raised trail?

This gives a clearer picture. There is no stream when it dips down, it simply dips into the lowland near the canal.

    Raised trail?

I've been in that swamp, and it has, up by the old forge, heavy orange coloring. So, yeah, maybe. There is a Dover Forge Ledger, maybe there is something in there that can be tied to that practice.

    Raised trail?

But here's a piece of the puzzle. See how it bends down into the creek, and then a possible canal shoots over to the old canal that used to be on the north side of Dover Forge Pond. maybe they used it to pull product via mule out of that lowland swamp.

    Raised trail?

That is a thought, but I don't think it's a road to cross Cedar Creek. The road to Bamber did cross at the sawmill here below. And, more importantly, there is no road shown on the topos from 1870 on up.

    Manchester WMA Fire

I poked my head into the Manchester WMA fire area to see if it's worth botanizing after the fire with my friend Mark. This was a hot fire (see cedars below). I think the answer is only a maybe. There are very few roads in here, and getting into the stream area requires a committment of time and...

    Raised trail?

I think there's an old blueberry field in that area. I can see them scraping the ground flat to set them in. Maybe that's the pile from using a bulldozer.

    Raised trail?

That is a very good question Dash. I lived in Bamber 38 years, just a few miles away, and I never realized that berm. Ditches are normal in the area, but that berm is a puzzle for sure.

    Oakay, did 'ya know?

I surveyed 20 swamp pink sites this Spring. Many were in Camden and Monmouth Counties, outside the Pine Barrens. It's odd, but it seems fires don't even start there. I wonder why that is. It does not seem like a suppression problem. The vegetation is totally out of control and fires are badly...

I can't stomach the taste of bourbon, but I'm glad these companies are thinking ahead, which will benefit us all. https://modernfarmer.com/2023/10/the-bourbon-industry-relies-on-white-oaks-which-are-in-decline-now-theyre-all-in-on-saving-them/

Best Buy to stop selling DVD's

My girlfriend at the time, in 2017, bought me a brand new Blu Ray, but I've only used it once since. But I keep it because I like westerns, and will watch them in the future (or so I say to myself).
