That is not the phone one, right? Because I did do the phone one and that stopped the dinnertime calls nearly cold.

    Junk Mail

Arrrgh! It now controls me! I have a couple boxes by my back door and they fill up in no time. Then I either have to bag it and wrap it with string or take it to the recycling center in town. I once tried a huge plastic box by the garbage cans outside. I used to stop there on the way in the...

    The 11 Minute Error

Pretty cool story Guy. Interesting. So, the property was supposed to be a rectangle with very long sides and short ends? Who would sell such an odd piece? 75 acres of woods too narrow to even build on.

    Becoming a Forest Ranger

Think baby steps Joe. Go to your local community college and talk to a counselor. They help people like you. Eat this elephant one bite at a time.

Nice photos. I could reach out and pet that black lab. I have not seen a more true to life photo than that one.

    Jobs Old Swamp

The same book does have a map showing Beaver Dam Branch as the last northern fork of Pole Bridge Branch like Tom's Map shows. If anyone has Henry Bisbees book they can look up these names; especially Troy Island and Job's Old Swamp.

    Jobs Old Swamp

I found this reference in the book "Pemberton Township, A History" (pg 58): Job's Old Swamp - Job's Old Swamp was a cedar swamp belonging to the Hanover Tract. It was four miles from Hanover Furnace and four from Hartshorne's Mill. Cedar rails and poles were frequently offered for sale at the...

    What constitutes the Pine Barrens?

What I meant Guy, was that the site of the actual Mill was shown on the other map. But even so, it is hard to pinpoint the location because how the map was drawn.

    Becoming a Forest Ranger

Joe, if I had a do-over, I'd get a Batchelors's degree in something. You are young enough to do it. Even if you had to live in a small place for 4 years in a college town and really throw yourself into it, it would be worth it. The sooner you start, the sooner you are done. You write well, go...

    Jobs Old Swamp

"Boyds? Over by Platte's Place? Sure, me and Sue were over there Saturday night. T'was a dance a'going on! Old Bill Collins was there from Buckingham, and Johnny Webb's boy Sammy. They don't get out much since the big fire. I hear they's a'busting their backs trying to get the homesteads back...

    Jobs Old Swamp

Ask an old wizened piney in the area. I'll bet some Browns Mills old-timers can be induced to pull a snippet of forgotten memory from the foggy recesses of their mind. "The cool, dim interior of a Rancocas River cedar swamp rose into Bucky's mind, and he remembered something his grandaddy...

    Jobs Old Swamp

I measured 5 miles from Browns Mills and 3 from Hanover Furnace and that is where we come up, so we are in the area. Mount Misery is throwing it off though. 5 miles from Mount Misery is further East.

    What constitutes the Pine Barrens?

I also note that Hartshorns Mill is on this map, the mill that Tom's post mentions in the Jobs Swamp post. Did you ever notice when you go North on 539 and you seem to "pop" out of the pines when you get just North of Fort Dix? All of a sudden you can grow corn easily. To me, that has always...
