    A Face For The Name

I had mentioned before that Y-Buc Bill talked of purchasing permits to deer hunt from the Wharton Estate caretaker Leeson Small prior to the State acquiring Wharton's holdings. Bill told me he was going to look for an old permit but I don't believe he ever found one. Through the power of Google...

I am starting to get use to it. I actually might miss it a little. We need these kinds of natural challenges as a bit of a wake-up call every now and then. If nothing else, it makes you realize how quickly you would be in deep trouble without the luxury of basic utilities such as natural gas...

The Passing of Y Buc Bill

You are correct. Bill always had interesting historic footnotes to add to any conversation regarding Wharton. My favorite was how he used to have to secure a hunting permit each year from Leeson Small who was the caretaker of Wharton's estate before the State purchased it !

The Passing of Y Buc Bill

Yes, I know Andy very well. I was sighting in at the club a few weeks before PA deer season and he was there doing the same. He used to come out every week with his friend Bill Andrews. Bill Andrews is related to Piney Warden on this site and a member of Moore Deer Club. Andy and Bill Andrews...

The Passing of Y Buc Bill

The Y Buc nickname was from his deer hunting friends at Retreat. I don't remember the exact details although he did explain it to me once. A Y buck is a deer with two points on each side but not having brow tines. See the example in the link below...

The Passing of Y Buc Bill

We had our weekly club meeting tonight at Square Circle. Our club has been meeting every week since 1938 and we have never let weather or anything else cancel a meeting. Ever. Our Club Secretary reads out the number of consecutive meetings we have had each week and we are over 4,200 right now. I...

The Passing of Y Buc Bill

Thanks Bob. Here are a few of my favorite pines related pictures of Bill. Bill was always a deer hunter in the pines but he started riding Harleys in the pines 1946, competed in enduros in 1947 and entered his first Sandy Lane Enduro in 1949. That's a long time ago. Most people who know even a...

The Passing of Y Buc Bill

Yesterday my good friend and mentor for all things outdoors, Bill Schemel, a.k.a. Y Buc Bill on this site, passed away at the age of 92 after a brief fight with cancer. I will miss him dearly. He was like a grandfather to me and I have been his friend since for over 32 years. Bill sat next to me...

    Bogs above Constable Bridge

Here's the trip report from the PBX hike that I put together 9 years ago. It was called Bog Slog. Unfortunately, all of the photo links are dead. Another point of sadness is that the reservoir used to be fairly easy to access from West Mill Road. But that has changed due to a certain gate that...

I just blocked my foundation vents from the outside last week. I have 4 in one section of the house. One vent is right next to the oil tank. My crawlspace entry is an adventure in itself. I have a hatch in our walk in closet floor under the carpet and under the clothes racks.

My tank is a 275 gal. horizontal in a crawl space and I have never had an issue with gelling or icing and my filter is in the house at the base of the heater. I do worry about the fuel line pathway though which comes out of the crawl, runs underground 12" deep for about twenty feet and comes...

I was just out muzzleloading, sitting along a frozen ditch, under a blowdown, in the middle of a 100 acre field. The conditions felt similar to Mt. Washington by the end of shooting light tonight. Let 14 different does walk and glassed a nice buck out of range that vanished along with the...
