I wonder how much money (and who's) is being gobbled up to create those management plans that run almost 100 pages long. These are being contracted out to design engineering firms, but they are also overseen by several different branches of the DEP.

Speaking of the trail, PPA, in the last newsletter made some claims about mileage along the Batona Trail that seem out of whack. The title is: Hike the Batona Trail in three 10-mile sections with naturalist John Volpa They go on to cite these three sections, none of which seems like 10 miles...

All I'm saying is that there is an abrupt change in the vegetation in the area of the survey line that shows up clearly on all aerial photos. This shot below is from 2007, before the 2010 fire. It has nothing to do with anything humans have done. The road being there is just happenstance.

But you did ask about the surface texture, no? It really is an extreme change in the vegetation. Here is a shot Chris took at the line where the vegetation changes when you cross the road.

An update. I was there on the 24th, and the water level is the lowest it's been in many years. Maybe the beaver are gone. I hope so, because as you can see by the photos below, they killed a lot of good cedar.
