Just a guess, but air density changes with temperature, which alters the oxygen content in a given volume. It's why old naturally aspirated engines performed better on cool days. Could be the O2 sensor is bad and the mixture settings needed for the warmer, less oxygen rich air are getting messed...

I suppose the pressure we put on the populations through decreased habitat and less access to prey might bring some of them into breeding contact that wouldn't have happened otherwise. Just speculating.
