Have not studied the NJDEP website closely enough to see what other changes have been made, although I also noticed that the Edward C. Bevan WMA is now the Millville WMA. When did that happen? Who was Bevan?

The Bureau of Land Management at 609-984-0547, can probably answer those questions. They are the agency that manages the WMA's.

I thought Millville became Bevan

You could be right... I just remember there used to be a big sign for the Bevan WMA on Ackley Road and IIRC it disappeared a couple years ago. The GIS dataset from the NJDEP calls it the Millville WMA with no mention of Bevan. That dataset has not been updated for a long time though.

If you look here, they call it "Millville (Bevans)". http://www.state.nj.us/dep/fgw/wmaland.htm

Thanks for the number, but I make it a point to never contact government agencies unless legally compelled to do so. :D

FWIW, the wayback machine shows the name as "Millville (Bevans)" going all the way back to 2000. Strange that Fish and Wildlife calls it "Bevans" when his name was "Bevan". https://web.archive.org/web/20000816172817/http://www.state.nj.us/dep/fgw/wmaland.htm

I guess my confusion is that I've always seen it listed as Bevan on the map but the NJDEP openspace dataset just calls it "Millville".

Google calls it Bevan: http://maps.njpinebarrens.com/#lat=39.337544075048044&lng=-75.09907263916017&z=14&type=terrain&gpx=

Also on the USGS topo (probably from the 1990s): http://maps.njpinebarrens.com/#lat=39.325527610713436&lng=-75.07255095642091&z=14&type=topo&gpx=

Note that the 24k USGS topo clearly says "Edward C. Bevans" but the 100k USGS topo, Google and the article in @Rooftree 's post call him "Edward G. Bevan". :)

The 1960 USGS historic topo does not indicate any public land in that area.

The confusion may come from Bevan WMA being in Millville Township :worms:

While working on a map, I just noticed that the Lenape Farms WMA no longer exists! The Western part has been swallowed up by the Maple Lake WMA and the Eastern part was swallowed by the Tuckahoe WMA. See these maps

http://www.state.nj.us/dep/fgw/pdf/wmamaps/maple_lake.pdf
http://www.state.nj.us/dep/fgw/pdf/wmamaps/tuckahoe.pdf

The little Maple Lake WMA (which is literally my backyard) has grown from its original 500 acres to 5000 acres... it also swallowed up the Gibson Creek WMA.

Have not studied the NJDEP website closely enough to see what other changes have been made, although I also noticed that the Edward C. Bevan WMA is now the Millville WMA. When did that happen? Who was Bevan? Is he now out of favor politically? :p
I have seen it called both for years. The signs around here at least till very recently still say Bevan but I have seen Millville WMA on maps in the past. The office is right down the street from my house.I"ll be driving by it tomorrow to pick grandson up from school.I"ll see if the sign still says Bevan.

My error; it began as a township and the state still thinks it is, see link. Its mailing address is in Millville. It's all so confusing

Yes definitely their mistake.
I just rode by the sign and it said Bevan.thats it just Bevan WMA no first name. The sign is here http://maps.njpinebarrens.com/#lat=39.31631988412624&lng=-75.03690037529947&z=19&type=nj2015&gpx= you can see the sign on google sightseeing but it's blurry

Back to the topic of the Lenape Farms WMA (which no longer exists and is now part of the Maple Lake WMA). Anyway, saw a backhoe and some trucks a few days ago, and have been hearing some noise in the distance. Today I noticed they are tearing down the old fence from the private game preserve days. So far it looks like they have only removed the section from Maple and 10th Ave down to the lake.

Good news for me, since I had to go almost a mile down the road to an entrance before. :)

The perimeter of that parcel is 11.73 miles. :) But I have no idea how much they actually plan to tear down, have just noticed them working on it for a couple days.

That's an interesting tract that I've never paid any attention to, but should. I wonder, is it tidal all the way up to the lake at Mays Landing?

I would think that to really explore it, a small motor boat would be preferable to a kayak.

Yes Bob it's tidal right up to the lake but it's pretty much fresh water at that point.
