Got an e-mail from Flickr about this yesterday. I had forgetten that I even had an account.

It's bounced around in new homes over the years and became worse with each bounce. At an early point in its life it was the gold standard. SmugMug is a good site, I have an account there; was given a complimentary 1 yr membership when I went with the Luminar editing software, plus some other bennies.

As an aside, Verizon is pretty much finished putting in FIOS service at the street. I am tempted to go with their offer, if it comes, but changing email addresses is an obstacle I'd rather not deal with.

A good opportunity to switch to an address that isn't tied to a specific ISP. :) I see Verizon trucks all over rural Atlantic/Cumberland/Cape May counties now. They are making quite an investment down here - good for them, no other company stepped up to offer high speed broadband in my area. Still completey happy with my FIOS service.

The latest;

As we announced on April 20th, Flickr has agreed to be acquired by SmugMug, the photography platform dedicated to visual storytellers. SmugMug has a long history of empowering people who love photography and who want to improve their craft, making them a perfect fit for Flickr and our creative community.

Nothing will change immediately with regard to your Flickr account. The Flickr product and brand will live on under SmugMug ownership. You will still access the same Flickr you know and love at www.flickr.com and via our mobile apps. SmugMug and Flickr will remain separate brands and you will continue to have options for free and Pro Flickr accounts. Until we notify you otherwise, you will continue to use your current login credentials.

As a result of the acquisition, Flickr accounts will be governed by SmugMug’s Terms of Service for Flickr and Privacy Policy for Flickr. The Terms of Service and Privacy Policy of Flickr’s current owner, Oath (formerly Yahoo), will not apply to the use of Flickr after the acquisition. You have until May 25, 2018 to review SmugMug’s Terms and Privacy Policy. If you do nothing in that time, your account will simply transition to SmugMug’s Terms of Service for Flickr and Privacy Policy for Flickr after the acquisition.

If you do not consent to SmugMug’s Terms and Privacy Policy, you will need to delete your Flickr account through your Account Settings. If you want to preserve a copy of your photos, be sure to download them from your Camera Roll first.

Read more detailed FAQs about this transition on the Flickr Blog.

We’re happy that Flickr is your home for photography and we look forward to the next chapter in our adventure together as we join the SmugMug family.

Thanks,
The Flickr Team

Interesting that you must actually delete your account or else the new policy will automatically apply to you.

I got a similar e-mail from Oath about my Yahoo account a few days ago so I went to Yahoo and deleted my account. It warned me that this would also delete my Flickr account. Good riddance! Nevertheless, I still got the same notice from Flickr that you posted above even though the account was supposed to be deleted.

Just got an email from a friend that said his Photobucket pictures are now showing up and he had not paid them anything. I wonder if this merger had anything to do with it.

This is what PB says. I've never used it, but wonder what the reaction will be from folks that changed stuff. :worms:

Must be connected in some way?

The tangled web of Flickr, according to Wikipedia.

Corporate changes
In June 2008, Flickr co-founder Stewart Butterfield announced his resignation, which followed that of his wife and co-founder Caterina Fake, who left the company on 13 June 2008.[33] Butterfield wrote a humorous resignation letter to Brad Garlinghouse.[34]

On 14 December 2008, The Guardian reported that three employees had been laid off as Yahoo! continued to reduce its workforce,[35] and on 30 November 2010, CNET reported Yahoo! was on the verge of a major layoff affecting 10% to 20% of its workforce. Flickr was specifically named as a target for these layoffs.[36]

On 13 June 2017, Verizon Communications acquired Yahoo!, including Flickr.[37][38] In June 2017, Verizon split Yahoo! and AOL into a new umbrella company, Oath.

On 20 April 2018, SmugMug acquired Flickr from Verizon's Oath.[4]
