Are there any known caves in the Pines?

I've walked sections of the Doughty/Cumberland road north of Hesstown.The section was abandoned and had many trees across it but was still quite a u shaped trough,an obvious horse and buggy road.Part of the road is still semi driveable but a large section is forgotten.

Both Ikey and Billy lived along the South River Road that (West to East) went from Coopers Mill to the Oasis in New Italy, passing the Lee Ponds (the "Lee Place"), Ikey's Pond (red circle), the Bears Head Pond, and ending near the Smith-Ireland burial grounds. Bears Head Pond is the head pond on Bear Branch, and is mentioned in Harshberger along with Watering Place Pond, hence the curious moniker.

There were other "caves" in the area, which I'll relate in another post.

there was a family named Sparks. they lived behind Laurel Lake near Port Norris. they had a relative that burrowed under their home and lived there. they also had a cannon made out of a drive shaft. and they played a great banjo.

I am related to Sparks and they live mostly in Dividing creek and Newport.My mommas mom is a sparks.It sounds as if you might be talking about my granny's brother.He is dead now but his chilren are all still kicking.I think you have been listening to tall tales but they are a crazy bunch.My mom says the older I get the more i look like em.
my grannys brother is shown below.
They did once blast a fellow out of a cannon made out of I think a 55 gallon drum and who knows what.I can ask my cousin,he's the one who built it.Burnt the guy pretty bad,he was menatlly challenged and thought they were sending him to the moon. I s--t thee not.If you've ever seen Turtle man on tv you get a slight inkling of my kin on turtle man is lame and tame in comparison.
By the way the blastee lived with them,a very long story,I could tell stories about him for days.
If you seen my recent avatar of the rebel guerilla this man pictured here is his grandson.

if you look at your map the road shown heading ne from cumberland to doughty is the one I walked a mile of it's abandoned length.There is also an old road called Blue Anchor on the Hartman maps that parallels union road to the west of it that is a very neat abandoned trough/horse road with big pines growing in the center of it.
on second look it wasn't that road I walked but a spur off of it that runs across a north south road here 39.39073° N 74.89824° W don't know what road this used to be but it is obviously old and was a buggy road,no wheel ruts here.

i did grant work in the late 80's for Downe Township. the building inspector was Wilburt Gould. on the Spark's house we put a roof, windows, doors and heater in . the kids lived in trailers around property. the oldest boy had had a shotgun accident and had a plate in his head. his wife looked just like Daisy Duke. we worked there 2 weeks. i don't think i ever ate that well.
they called the young man that lived under house "Honey Dipper"he came from Tennessee

the guy with the plate in his head is my cousin Butch (George jr) Daisy Duke is my aunt Nellie.She doesn't look like daisy anymore.They were first cousins and got married.kinda pissed the rest of the family off.They thought they left that crap back in WV but Butch's response was hell she's fixed we can't have kids.(she already had three by first marriage)The guy under the house was Charles (Eggie) He is the mentally handicapped among other things.he was from WV also he had a broken wrist as a kid and never went to the doctor and it mended at a 90 degree angle to his arm and thats how it stayed.He was stealing chikens back in wv when the farmer took after him with a gun.He came to a railroad cut about 15 ft deep.He had a chicken under each aqrm and figgered he could jump and the chickens would flap and let him down gently.he either underestimated his weight or the flapping power of two hens,in any case to this day he has a gimp wrist.He was also of questionable sexual orientation.But he came with a governement check.The family fought over him for that check.he went his rounds but never lived with me or my immediate family so his influence has nothing to do with why I have heels on my hip waders.I could tell Eggie stories till the cows come home.The place they lived they called the Holler because it was a clearing in the woods and reminded my uncle George of wv except it was flat.Do you recognize his pic? They are a crazy bunch but non alcoholic and their fun.The other bunch from Dividing creek were mostly drunks and mean and were handy with a blade when drunk.They routinely made the papers back in the 70's till the law eventually ran em all to Cleveland Ohio where the law found them there also.As they have gotten older they have mellowed somewhat,not much.I'm glad to see you met my kin.Now some of the things I say and do won't be so much a mystery to you

Boy you have one interesting family, fun to hear about them. Hollywood should make a TV show about them like the "Real Sparks of NJ". Would be better than all of the real housewives of blah-blah-blah

they are a very colorful family. why would i remember after 100's of jobs in that area LOL. i do remember them being very Christian and praying over a worker when he fell. very nice people.

when were you there Karl?I was thinking daisy Duke coulda been my Aunt nellie but they were only married a year,too much alike I guess he then married Gina he met in Ohio and brought her back and I don't remember her too well from back then but I have seen old photos (Butch and Gina had about eight years on me) and she was quite a catch. two of the boyse are still in the area including Butch and the rest of em moved to Tennessee.Eggie is in Ancora where he belonged all along and doing who knows what with who knows what.Butch still has the plate in his head.He had an old flintlock and was experimenting with different objects that could be shot out the barrel besides roundball and savitz.namely nails and bolts and such.He touched the pan off and after the flash powder burnt up there was no explosion so he looked down the barrel.He got it in the forehead.He has had short term memory loss ever since.I just went back and read your first post.you say late 80's?he was married to Gina then,I was already grown.Yes Gina was a hottie back then,still cute but older and heftier.They were not related at all,I guess thats the way they do it up here ,right? I've always said if the DNA is good why dilute it? Recycle it By the way I'm not related to my wife either as far as I know but I'm hoping my genealogical inquests will provide something positive eventaully. I'm glad you met the jersey hillbillies.Been here since the 50's and you'd still think they were in the holler
