All,

I thought I would pass on some info I have acquired on the property's in the immediate area of Atsion Lake at 206. Hopefully, you find it interesting. It is hard to read the info, so I may have the lots somewhat out of order. All of the info is from the mid 50's so it is not up to date.

There were 5 lots that the state was not able to acquire on Atsion road at 206. These lots are the homes that presently are there across from the lake. These lots have very small frontage but run semi deep behind the houses.

Starting with the lot closest to 206 here is what I know. It was purchased on August 8, 1947 by Florence V. and Pickett (sp?) B. Russell from Thomas W. and Mildred E. Fauver.

The next lot was purchased by John R Wells and Nora I Wells from George Kell on May 24, 1941.

The next lot which is the biggest was purchased by Norman E. Adams from Maud C. Kell on September 13, 1951.

The next lot was purchased by James Adams Sr. along with Blanche and Norman Adams and Helen (no last name) on Jan 17 or 19, 1950 from John Etheridge and Mamie Sallie and Florence Miller.

The final lot was owned in the mid 50's by John Wells but there was no deed. (Whats up with that!) There was a previous deed for Andrew and Phoebe Etheridge to Theodore Kell on July 23, 1907 or 1909. It appears there may have been something odd with this one because the state acquired it eventually.

Across 206 on Quaker Bridge road we obviously have the church property, but there also are 3 others on that side of the "Atsion River" as it was called then. The three property's are or were the Gloucester Gun Club lot, the Cavileer lot, and the Giberson lot.

I have the property coordinates if anyone is interested. If anyone wants I can plot them on an aerial map and post the property locations. I know there have been questions before about what property is private in that area, and I now know the answer to that.

Also, on the other side of the river adjacent to the location of where the Atsion Train Station was, there is a .2196 acre property that was owned by Huen J Phillips. I have no idea if the state owns that now or not. I would assume so.

I found this very interesting. Those people living at Atsion really appear to be the only people still residing at any former iron furnace town in at least the central and southern portion of the state. I realy hope the people living in the log cabin are able to either sell their house to someone else who would want to live in it as is or deed it down to a relative with the same interest. I truly hope the State does not come into ownership of it due to their lack of interest and outright destruction of the other buildingsthey came to own. Speaking of, their really should be a petition made up to save the house at Bulltown since they are doing the usual "wait and it will fall" type of maintenance.

Yes, if it isn't a lot of trouble, it would be great to see the lots depicted on a aerial of other map. I have access to tax maps at my job if you would like me to acquire them.

I am always interested in maps of any kind from the pines, be it tax or whatever. So if you come upon any of interest I would appreciate it.

I will get the locations as soon as I can. I have to convert them to DMS and add them to the map. I will try to get them tonight.

I just realized that the map does not show the coordinates of the properties, but here is the map so you can see for yourself. I could figure it out but it would take me quite a while so I am going to pass on that.

Guy, what do you mean "as it was called then"? What is it called now?

I'll have a look. I am wondering now if the tax maps will show the majority of the Pine Barrens as one (1) big area of it will contain any individual lots.

There are occupied houses at Allaire. Not in Allaire Village, but the outskirts of the village. These date from around the time that the furnace was in operation so I tend to include them as part of the town.

Yes, you're right. I am aware of those houses and they are old. They're not as old as that log cabin at Atsion though. They are mid-1800's and Howell went out of blast forever in the early 1840's so they are contemporary with the Works. I have heard the residents of those houses have addresses of Allaire still!

BTW, there was a forge just up the road from Allaire which predates Howell Works by many years and one at Squankum too. There was only a sawmill at Allaire in 1813.

Thanks for the map.

Has anyone noticed that they have fixed up the first house on the corner of Atsion road and 206? I did not stop to look it over closely; however, it really looks nice on a quick pass.

They just installed a septic field in the back yard. It looks like someone buried an elephant. I knew the area was swampy but the high water table must be at ground level. You could go sledding on that hill :D !

I don't remember anyone posting this, but I could be wrong. Just in case:

http://medfordstation.com/~doug/pge4a.html

I have met that man. He went to school with my boss. He runs (if it is still in business) the Medford Station internet service which the comapny I work for was formally using.

I have an interesting story I will tell you when I meet you again Bob on how my boss and him became friends :)

EDIT: I have read that but don't remember anyone posting it.

I talked to my boss today, and he said the man I met is Bruce who must be the brother or son of Doug who wrote that page. So I have not met him as I thought.

The family lived in downtown Medford and sold their property for quite a bit of money and moved to Tennessee. I am uncertain if Doug has moved there or not.
