Went out for a 3 mile walk this morning. The smoke was still quite strong depending on the direction we walked.

That base map appears to have a lot of distortions along with the mislabeling of Rockwood.

Just drove out that way. Tuckerton was a pretty hot burn. Hampton road was back fired and not to bad. The smoke was blowing towards batsto fireline and on that side of 206. Surprised how big it got with minimal winds, green vegetation and somewhat wet forest. But that area hasn’t burned in a while. Another beautiful pine forest for 50 years is the silver lining.

Batona Camp has 5 active camps, yesterday there were 3. We walked the dogs at the field. There are lots of FFS vehicles moving around and an empty trailer.

Which part of Tuckerton Rd were you able to see? I'm assuming not down near the Batona Trail crossing, or anywhere south of High Crossing down to Bulldozed RD. You were probably up near the junction with Carranza Rd? I think that area is probably a denser pitch pine lowland and not the pine-oak upland more typical of Tuckerton Rd along the sand ridge section.

Basto fireline? You mean the fireline road nearer to Basto, or a fireline along the Basto river south of Hampton Rd and north of Quaker Bridge?

The northern perimeter of the lines was Hampton Rd? If so, did they also burn out around the juvenile facility, and tie into Tuckerton Rd, using Carranza-Tuckerton Rd as the east perimeter?

It sounds like you were not able to get to Bulldozed Rd, and the state is terrible at map production, but it seems Bulldozed Rd is the southern boundary (This was just my general observation based on the closure map).

I reckon this area "got big" as the state is forced to use wildfire as a prescribed fire and conducts burn outs when they occur. Also, even with a high moisture content in the live fuels, the pineland's ericaceous shrubs like galberry and sheep laurel, are prone to explosive fire due to their resinous leaves. Basically, they want to burn and therefore you either actively manage by burning when fuel loads are lower and atmospheric conditions are conductive to send the smoke to an area with fewer people, or you get it in heavily populated areas in inconvenient times. The dense pine leaf cast duff won't help, either.

Not a bad fire area; east of the Basto River from Hampton RD to Bulldozed RD, and over to Carranza and Tuckerton. That area was in dire need of a fire. Too bad NJ FFS or DEP hasn't done any active management in decades. You would think DEP might prioritize the central areas of their large state forests, but for reasons I can't understand, there is no management at all. The tools exist to burn several thousand acres in a day, igniting with GPS driven drones and those aerial ignition pig pong balls. It would be far better to do that in March than to have a very hot fire in June. At least for a first entry.

It seems the current overgrown and horrible forest conditions are the desired goal by someone, since evidence of decades old fires exists and nothing seems to be happening. The area which has burned in the last 24 hours has many old fire plow lines from when strip head ignition was used. They have grown over and are filled in but they are still there. It could be changed if the state cared. From a budgetary perspective, you might think they would. These wildfires have to cost a lot more than a prescribed fire. Some places really don't even need more than a few dormant season prescribed burns before shifting to a more ecologically appropriate summer burn conducted ever 5 to 10 years to be well managed better wildlife habitat. Easier to walk in, too.

Yes tuckerton road at intersection with caranza. Beyond that it was closed. Guessing it burned down to bulldozed road. I think they did burn around Costello but didn’t drive back there. It was burned from Hampton/glossy spung up to where it branches off to tuckerton. The smoke was moving towards what I call batsto fireline road, parallel to 206.
