I have seen this phenomenon on the weather radar in different locations several times recently and finally got a screenshot this morning. Don't remember seeing anything like this in the past, but maybe I just missed it? Perhaps it's a change in the radar that shows this kind of thing now?

It looks a bit like bird migration shown on weather radar. David La Puma, now director of the Cape May Bird Observatory, pioneered the use of it to track the intensity of migration. Some info from his web site which is no longer a source since he became director, too busy. Audubon also has a site with info, as does Cornell. You should see it on a full USA radar map. Pretty amazing stuff.

That crossed my mind. Would take a LOT of birds to cover that area. Also curious how the area near Salem is synchronized with the other one near Egg Harbor City.

You would not believe the numbers during migration; birds of a feather flock together Dog's explanation gives a lot more details from the radars perspective.

Audubon's Fall Festival is later this month. The Morning Flight is a great show, at times thousands zooming by
