What local or online source do you recommend for purchasing a DSLR camera? I have basically just been looking on Amazon. I was not interested in buying used, I.E., Craigslist. Any comments appreciated.

They are terrific. If you can, visit the store in person. It's an experience which you won't soon forget! For the most part, everything is out on display where you can play with it and you will never find so many products under one roof anywhere else. Really cool place. (disclaimer: they're a sponsor of dvinfo.net where I'm a moderator :))

If you don't want to go that far but still like the idea of a "real" store with helpful salespeople, check out New York Camera and Video which, strangely enough, is in Pennsylvania. I have bought a couple cameras there and it's a nice place too (with two locations): http://www.nycv.com/

Another interesting place which I like is Classic Cameras in Runnemede. They usually have an assortment of used stuff like lenses: http://www.insiderpages.com/b/3717921835

Another smaller store with some interesting stuff is T&F Cameras in Vineland: http://www.tandfcamera.com/

Even worth stopping by the Camera Stop in Medford. Again, a smaller store but I like the neighborhood atmosphere: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&sou...n2pSA&cd=1&dtab=2&pcsi=10809033243158420776,0

You may not find rock bottom prices at places like these, but I like supporting the independent bricks and mortar stores whenever possible.

As a possible alternative should budget become an issue, I'd suggest looking at the Canon SX10 IS

http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/c...&fcategoryid=144&modelid=17630#ModelDetailAct

Not a DSLR but very close in features and of course good range on the lens opposed to carting a heavier lens around.

Lens is an amazing 35 mm equivilant of 28mm to 560mm.

Picked one up just before the Holidays and have been pleased with it thus far.

I do enjoy going to B&H out of new york city.Try to look up when locals are having a photo shoot like at Brigantine National Wildlife Refuge, that way you can get hands on. Most popular are Nikon and Cannon brands.Good luck. Also depends what ur piggy bank has in it.Give us a budget range and we can help you.

Well I priced items out individually at B&H and then in "Kits" at Amazon and it seems the kits are the better deal. I am leaning towards this Canon XSi with lens kit (I know the longer lens does not have IS). I am still not ready to pull the trigger. I hope to make a purchase within a month or so. Any advice appreciated.

Edit: This guy does good reviews for all cameras.

I buy at B&H or Adorama, both online. The place I use for reviews and info at the link 'DPReview'. They have detailed camera reviews and tests, comparison charts and camera forums, just look in the left margin.. There is also a website specifically for Nikon gear, what I use, at the second link, with similar test and forums for things Nikon. I'd be glad to try and answer any general questions or Nikon'centric ones.

B&H holds seminars at their store in Manhattan if your up to a trip to the city.

If you've decided or need advice on gear, check out Allen's before you buy. They quite often can beat the big guys and is my 'goto' place if something is out of stock elsewhere.

Not trying to be a wise guy, but you can probably pick up a used body for less than the repair, they go for around $100. There is one large repair shop in Cherry Hill, Comet Camera Repair, see the link. The do online estimates

I just hate paying sales tax.

The state says you have to pay it to them even if the out of state vendor doesn't collect:http://www.state.nj.us/treasury/taxation/su_5.shtml

If you purchase taxable merchandise from an out-of-state mail order or Internet business and no New Jersey sales tax is collected, you owe 7% use tax on the purchase price of the goods. Use tax is due within twenty days after the merchandise is delivered into New Jersey. As of 10-1-06, delivery charges (shipping, handling, postage, etc.) imposed by the seller are also subject to tax if the goods purchased are subject to tax.

And regardless, the state of the economy is probably the final death sentence for tax free internet shopping. Our neighboring state of New York is already implementing a program: http://money.cnn.com/2008/05/30/technology/yang_amazon.fortune/index.htm

it was fun while it lasted. Starting June 1, Amazon (AMZN, Fortune 500) will charge a sales tax to shoppers who live in New York, even though the retailer maintains no physical operations in the Empire State.

Why the crackdown? With the economy in the tank, the State of New York was getting desperate to fill its budget gap. So it expanded its rules about what constitutes a business presence in the state. Amazon lets other sites earn commissions by linking to products on its pages as part of a program called Amazon Associates. And because some of those sites are based in New York, the state considers the Seattle-based retailer fair game.
