What local or online source do you recommend for purchasing a DSLR camera? I have basically just been looking on Amazon. I was not interested in buying used, I.E., Craigslist. Any comments appreciated.

Ok - thanks, my whole budget is less than what you paid for that lens... lol.
Looking at the Canon XSi and maybe a 75-300 lens.
B & H Photo probably has one of the best, if not the best reputation for mail order/internet sales around.
They are terrific. If you can, visit the store in person. It's an experience which you won't soon forget! For the most part, everything is out on display where you can play with it and you will never find so many products under one roof anywhere else. Really cool place. If you don't want to go that far but still like the idea of a "real" store with helpful salespeople, check out New York Camera and Video which, strangely enough, is in Pennsylvania. I have bought a couple cameras there and it's a nice place too (with two locations): http://www.nycv.com/
Another interesting place which I like is Classic Cameras in Runnemede. They usually have an assortment of used stuff like lenses: http://www.insiderpages.com/b/3717921835
Another smaller store with some interesting stuff is T&F Cameras in Vineland: http://www.tandfcamera.com/

You may not find rock bottom prices at places like these, but I like supporting the independent bricks and mortar stores whenever possible.

As a possible alternative should budget become an issue, I'd suggest looking at the Canon SX10 IS

I do enjoy going to B&H out of new york city.Try to look up when locals are having a photo shoot like at Brigantine National Wildlife Refuge,that way you can get hands on. Most popular are Nikon and Cannon brands.Good luck.Also depends what ur piggy bank has in it.Give us a budget range and we can help you.
Well I priced items out individually at B&H and then in "Kits" at Amazon and it seems the kits are the better deal. I am leaning towards this Canon XSi with lens kit (I know the longer lens does not have IS). I am still not ready to pull the trigger. I hope to make a purchase within a month or so. Any advice appreciated.

I'll add to the pile...B&H is great. I just ordered another lens from them for my alpha a100. I have nothing but positive comments about them!
I buy at B&H or Adorama, both online. The place I use for reviews and info at the link 'DPReview'. They have detailed camera reviews and tests, comparison charts and camera forums, just look in the left margin.. There is also a website specifically for Nikon gear, what I use, at the second link, with similar test and forums for things Nikon. I'd be glad to try and answer any general questions or Nikon'centric ones.

I'm supposed to be getting my Minolta 101 back from my son,with all the lenses and extenders but the mirror needed work before , does any body know of a reasonable camera repair shop?
Not trying to be a wise guy, but you can probably pick up a used body for less than the repair, they go for around $100. There is one large repair shop in Cherry Hill, Comet Camera Repair, see the link. The do online estimates

Did you see the news today? NYC is planning to implement a whole bunch of new taxes due to their financial problems. NJ is probably next. Folks can't afford to buy stuff, yet they figure increasing taxes on stuff will increase their revenue
