I understand its recommended that you have a CB radio-
Is there any channel that the people exploring the pines use most frequently?

Thanks

I don't think any of us own a CB radio.

In the future, please post things like this in the "Electronics" forum. This forum is just for people talking about trips they have taken.

I don't. I did just pick up a Rino GPS, which can be used as a radio within a 2 mile radius and can transmit a waypoint to another Rino user.

I think the new FRS radios (like the Motorola Talkabout) are pretty cool. They'd be useless if you wanted to talk with other people that might be in the pines.

It's rare to see a vehicle with a CB antenna anymore. Most of the time it's just the 4 wheelers that have them installed.

10-Four Good Buddie.

I remember the joke that was going around during the CB craze:

I guy who had an IQ he thought was too high because he couldn't have a normal conversation with people -- he would start talking about physics and other heavy esoteric stuff everytime he had a conversation -- went to a specialist who lowered IQs. The guy sat down in a chair, the specialist put earphones on him that were connected to a machine, which he set to lower the guy's IQ to the point where he would still be very smart, but not too smart. To do this, the guy had to be connected for five minutes.

The specialist got a phone call, and ended up talking for 1/2 hour until suddently he remembered about his patient. He rushed back to the machine, turned it off, and learned that with this much time under the treatment his patient's IQ would be lowered to that of an idiot. The specialist took the headphones off the patient and asked "Are you OK?"

"10-Four Good Buddie. Everything is AOK," the patient replied.

That's what the Rino has, FRS. Don't know anyone else with one yet, but we could have used a second one yesterday when we were hunting for the tracks, we could have split up and sent the location out if one of us had found it.

I actually own 3 CB radios and my mom still has my dads and hers. I have two President Grants and a Midland 853. The Grants were really nice. I worked with a man who lived near Jeff in Levittown who took me to a man there who "peaked" CB radios from his house. He had my CB really cooking. I had heard about a way to alter the frequency of a 40 channel CB and was able to solder a few wire to the chip and altered one of the buttons to turn the alteration on and off. I was able to go FAR FAR above and below the legal frequency, even though I mainly stayed on 27.555MHZ. (Channel 55).

It was a single sideband which when peaked really worked well. I had a 5 element Beam antenna on the roof of my parents house with a rotor on it to turn and direct my signal. When the "skip" was going I could talk all over the world. But there were times you could barely get a few miles. I used the portable Grant in my car and at home. I did not have a base station.

When I would camp on the Forked River Mountains I would get up in the morning and drive the short distance to the top and talk to my dad in Marlton. It was like he was in the car with me. This was before cell phones and with the beam antenna, and both my dad and my CB's "peaked" using sideband and channel 55, we could talk while I was anywhere in the pines when the sunspots were not active.

Sadly when my dad died and my interest in it ebbed, I needed to remove the beam antenna from my moms house. It was so heavy that I just tied a rope to the midpoint of the pole, removed the 6 inch bolts and pulled on it with a rope at a distance and watched it crash to the ground. I used the CB in my Land Cruiser for a short while after, and it now gathers dust in my cedar chest.

Here I am talking to my dad in 8/78.

Here is a photo of it in my car. I mounted it in the counsol between the seats. I would just throw the coat that is backwards on the seat in the picture over it when I left my car along a road in the woods.
