TOMS RIVER BUREAU
JACKSON -- Three township men were rescued after 30 minutes in icy water early yesterday after the Jeep in which they were traveling fell off a cliff and into a lake.

The driver was charged with driving while intoxicated, according to police. One of the passengers in the vehicle was listed in critical condition yesterday at Jersey Shore Medical center, Neptune.

According to police, Douglas W. Zoolkoski, 52, Lakehurst Avenue, was driving a 1989 Jeep Wrangler on Toms River Road when police said he trespassed onto property commonly known as Gliddens. He drove off a cliff, rolled over and plunged 50 feet into the lake below. Traffic Safety Patrolman Patrick Mackin said the Jeep broke through the frozen surface of the lake and was found partially submerged on its wheels.

Jackson police received a 911 call about the accident at about 12:24 a.m. yesterday. Jackson police officers, along with the Cassville Volunteer Fire Company, responded to the area and searched about 30 minutes before the Jeep was located, police said.

Back-seat passenger Joseph Fragiglio, 30, Lakehurst Avenue, was listed yesterday in critical condition at Neptune's Jersey Shore Medical Center. Fragiglio was air-lifted to the medical center, police said. Front-seat passenger Stan Mosakowski, 30, of Jackson Street, was treated and released from Community Medical Center in Toms River. Information regarding Zoolkoski's condition was not available. Jackson First Aid squad transported Zoolkoski and Mosakowski to Community Medical Center, police said.

Zoolkoski was charged with driving while intoxicated, careless driving and operating a vehicle on private property without consent.

The crash is under investigation by Mackin and Patrolman Wayne Olejarz. The Ocean County Sheriff's Department Criminal Investigations Unit and the New Jersey State Police North Star Medicav Helicopter also responded to the scene.

Yes that was my brother doug, who was also a Chiropractor. We drove out there in our jeeps a few years later and that cliff was every bit 50 foot! I couldn't believe they all made it out alive. I wonder if you can still get in that sand pit as i have a grand cherokee overland 4wd and would like to go back this winter. to take some pictures.

According to 2010 data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the base rate for a flight in Atlantic City and the surrounding area is $3,307.89. In rural areas around Atlantic City, the rate jumps to $5,274.43.
The farther a patient is from a hospital, the more money it costs for helicopter flights. Rural rates for medevac services are $32.30 per mile in rural areas and $21.53 in urban areas. Those costs are in addition to the base rates.

And yet the same distance by ambulance probably would cost nearly as much.
