That's actually sickening man.
The infection alone that could have festered around that thing,
I can't imagine. Keep that ear protected.

I knew it went in, but did not know it was in there. The ER’s job was to tell me that. I can’t see in there. They just told me there was a hole in it so I assumed there was nothing in there. I was uncertain what happens when it heals, so the hearing loss seemed normal until it healed. I didn’t know what to expect. I started to doubt all was well while we hiked on the weekend when I kept hearing a clicking noise as I walked. I am assuming it was the stick moving around.

Looking back on it I should have went right away to a specialist and not trusted the ER.

Holy CRAP! That's un freaking believably big. I'd be plenty chapped at the ER doc who looked in your ear and missed THAT! Especially nice touch that part of your eardrum is still attached. :)

Happy healing. You'll be good as new in no time, I'll bet. Thanks for posting about it, what an amazing story, I can totally relate to the crowd of people waiting to look through the otoscope at that. That's a really interesting case!
 
OUCH! That's unbelievable that the ER doctor couldn't see that. Glad it sounds like you'll fully heal.

Guy - I'm not the "sue happy type" at all. esp since I'm about to graduate from dental school... but the ER Doc missing that is just absolute negligence.. i hope you're being compensated for any additional expenses his "missing that" caused you. again, i'm not suggesting you to do anything - the LEAST the ER doc owes you is an apology over the phone.. I've made mistakes, myself, in dental school.. and all ppl usually want is an apology and admission of guilt.. it's the last he can do.. glad you're feeling better..
 
Everyone makes mistakes. My wife feels more strongly than I do about it and is trying to save us the ER co-pay. As of yet she has done nothing, so if she doesn't I certainly won't be. I suspect when the bill comes in she will not pay it and they will learn why.

I can tell that I will be 100 percent soon, so no big deal to me. Right now the ringing is higher than usual, but that usually subsides after a week or so. I just have to focus and concentrate more to tune it out when it is quiet in the room.

Wow, what an unlucky accident. It doesn't suprise me that the ER doctors missed that, often when I have had an ear infection (and go to the clinic) they look in the ear, see it's red, then say "you've got a cold it will go away on its own". Then I come back in a week in severe pain with discharge and they say, OK, you've sufferred enough, now you get antibiotics. Why should I suffer at all?
Anyway, hope you feel better. I'd refuse to pay the ER bill if I were you. They should consider themselves lucky they didnt get sued.
 
Guy, my life has been spent getting things stuck in my ear. Just last week I had about my 20th Myringotomy. It's the price of being me. Having one's ear pierced (internally) is painful no matter how good the drugs are (and I have some good ones administered).

Nevertheless, never have I had something that size inserted. Holy smokes! I hope all is well.
 
All is well. Just a slight louder ringing which should mellow.

WOW what a crazy story!

I've had an ear infection twice and they are no fun, I couldn't imagine having a stick broke off in your ear.

Did the emergency room people look inside your ear?
