It's impossible to get a permit in East Amwell. The guy would do much better to move and try it in another town.
They require you to obtain a permit to move a gardening shed, (and no, I am not making that up), and then they don't make it easy. That guy is fighting a losing battle.

Fascinating. If you look at his property with Google Earth, you can see those big tanks. Apparently, he's been trying to do this for quite a while. At least I think that's what they are.

Hydrogen go BOOM!

:v:Anyone remember the film footage of the Hindenburg going up in a blaze? I know, I know, having an exterior skin cloth impregnated with resin and metal filings doesn't help, especially with an electical storm all around, not to mention static electricity, but golly, I think he's literally playing with fire at his neighbor's expense. I wouldn't want to live next to that EXPLOSIVE experiment. An oil well would be far safer. Ba-Ba-Ba-BOOOOOOOOMMMM!!!

But does he have the permit for those tanks? Could be that part of the guy's problem is that he started to do the work in the theory that it is easier to get the permits after the fact, easier to get forgiveness than permission and the powers that be didn't go for it. NJ towns or at least the people who do inspections and issue permits don't like it when people don't go thru the hoops; I know a guy who started putting a deck up on a weekend with a couple of buddies, the township came by on Monday and made them rip out all the work that they had done, refused to even consider a permit after the fact.

The reason being that if you don't get a permit, they don't know about the improvement to your home, and can't tax you accordingly.

My mother put new vinyl siding on her house to replace the old siding which had aged and looked awful. She got a permit to do the work. The township increased her taxes $300/yr. Not that she did any new work, just replaced old work. My mother basically told the town (Brick Township) that she would rather let her house fall apart then do anything to improve it after the fact.

I wanted to build a deck in my back yard too. I'm going to end up building a patio with slate chips. It's not considered a permanent improvement so they can't tax me on it (besides the land that it sits on.) I want to get a new shed too. I want one of those large wooden ones. But I'll stick it on wooden beams so I don't have to pour a concrete foundation and they can't hit me with it being a permanent structure.

This is, of course, if I ever get more than $0.25 to my name.

Well, yeah, that's the first thing I thought of, and I understand how the township is concerned that this guy is trying to handle that much gas. They will never let him put those tanks in, so he's wasted a huge amount of money. He'd be better off moving to Wyoming.

Gah. I tried to get a permit to put in a new furnace and air conditionar last month, but the application was so completely incomprehensible. they just handed me a tome of paperwork and an accompanying attitude, and it seemed that none of the applications had anything to do with what I planned to do to the house. Between that and the outrageous taxes in my town, I just shrugged and gave up. They'll never know. It's not like we added anything, we just replaced it. To heck with them. They can fine me if they want, that would be easier than filling out those papers.
