I stand corrected. Did you get his name or where he lived? I have a suspicion that I may have picked blueberries with him in the mid 70's.

I started rattling off a couple names of people who graduated around me...Earl Luker for one, and his eyes lit up. I'll ask his name next time and see where he lives.

a village...in the pines
Hello botany folk....
I have a question. Are Pine Barrens gentians known to contain so much variation of white in their petals or do they whiten as the petals are exposed? I was under the impression that there were splotches of white...? ? ? see photo:

These growing within a few feet seemed much more solid in their color formation...

No, that is a stunning rare beauty you have there Turtle. There are often white ones among the blue ones, but that is rare too, and I think its just a gene variation. There was an all white one last year at Dover Forge. But to see one such as you have, that is sort of mixed color, no. I have seen many Pine Barren Gentian and none such as that.

That one you have there is really, really nice.

I am going to assume the banks of the Basto or Mullica (no?).

Great find, turtle. Was the picture taken recently? ......

Close to Rt. 206 about 2 weeks after Guy and Bob did their Great Swamp day.
I was walking and just came upon them like WOW. I've been taking photos but not having the time to get them onto the site as often as I like to. I thank you for the info on this.....I remember where I saw it. Is it likely to bloom with this coloration next season? If so, I will be sure to check.

Instead of the usual meeting tonight the Pemberton Twp. Environmental Commission went to the P.P.A. for a presentation about pinebarrens flowers given by Russ Juelg. It was a very interesting and informative presentation and I found Russ to be a very good source of info.

Russ is a good friend of mine. If you can afford it, take one of his plant courses. Its interesting and a lot of fun.

I just looked it up on PPA's website. They do it in June and it looks very interesting, I think I'll check it out next year.

Last Sunday I helped the PPA with a cleanup in Whitesbog(Ben announced it in the Get togethers forum) and worked with Ben, Russ, Emile DeVito, PPa members and members of the Philadelphia Botanical Club. I am very impressed by their dedication. Today I signed up with the PPa.

Good! I am waiting for Kara to finish college before I join again. Every penny counts these days.

Bob, I was in the area where we saw the Goodyera pubescens with the newest member to this site Allen Crawford (his contact info has a link to his flickr account which has a lot of good photos). One of the other volunteers told us about the Cranefly in the area. I spotted the unusual leaf and saw purple underneath so I asked Allen what it was and he said thats it. We were also told there is much more Platanthera lacera in that area.

Tell Allen I said Hi. What's his screen name?

Yes, there are 3 spots here in Ocean County with P. Lacera. Dover Forge is one.

At the bottom of the forums page it lists the newest member to the site. He chose Allen Crawford as his screen name. His mind really shifts into high gear once he gets into the woods, it reminds me of someone else I know!

I viewed your photos Allen. You have a keen attention to detail and I can tell you love the pines. You see a lot of the same things I do out there.

Bob, I just ordered The Vegetation of the New Jersey Pine Barrens by J.W. Harshberger, I hope it's not too much for me to understand.

It's likely not what you think it is Tom, but you'll enjoy the historical aspect. You'll get a kick out some of the photos and the places he mentions though, so its good to have in your collection. But he "usually" only uses latin names and most of it deals with more of an environmental study of the pines flora. It can be dry, but also fun at times. The photos are not real clear, but some of the pygmy pines photos are shocking at how low they were back then.
