same snake

I believe there were at least three that I walked up on. This one chose to fight and never did turn belly up. About 20 inches. Mean girl. Hissed like a punctured tire. Struck at me 6 times.

Must of been some mating activity for three to be in the same area. King of Pines was there alot of fowler's toads in the area you were in?

no toads but some fence lizards.

New Jersey has a herp atlas that is pretty good for Jersey specifically. Fish and Wildlife sells it.

"A Feild guide to the pine Barrens of NJ" by Howard Boyd is a must!! Howard is a great guy with a real passion for the barrrens. He is also a wealth of knowledge, both in history, but especially on the flora and fauna (more so the flora). He sells the book and signs it at the Whitesbog Blueberry festival, but the book is available at several locations. Marilyns's (Buszby's) is one.
