14 degrees in the woods this morning. I am reviewing my gear and clothes strategies after hiking in for 1/2 mile, then standing relatively motionless in the cold for over an hour.

Layers. When we alpine skied, it was a relative short period of exertion when skiing, followed by a long period of waiting in the lift line and then the lift. The hardest part was keeping the feet warm.

Yes indeed, cold feet were definitely the main problem today. I ordered a pair of LaCrosse AlphaBurly 800 gram thinsulate boots. With liner socks to wick away the sweat and Carhartt Artic Wool socks, I'm thinking that will do it. The Pine Barrens aren't the Alps but they seem to be a couple of degrees colder than surrounding towns.

I found the solution to cold feet with really good fitting boots and sock liner. Never had to wear any socks, as the boot insulation was sufficient. Your situation is a bit different though. They also market fleece socks; in my experience, I prefer fleece over wool. Never been to the Alps, the Adirondacks and Green Mts get plenty cold ;)

Why don't you buy those iron-oxidizing heating pads? It's worth a try. I use them all the time for my hands, and sometimes my toes. I have poor extremity circulation.

Thanks for the suggestion! I was unaware these things existed. They look like they would be a big help on extremely cold days. If the new boots do not cut it, these will be a great option.

Edit: I ordered the hand warmers since they are cheaper than the foot. Some people say they use them in their boots. I will also try them in my gloves, since I have a convoluted glove set-up so I can operate my camera, tripod, etc.

My sister knitted me 2 pairs is 100% wool socks that I use when fly fishing in the winter It is the real deal Heavy wool socks will do it And wool makes you warmer if it gets wet

I bought a pair of cabelas boots this year and I will tell you they are the best boots i have ever bought. 3 differnt insulation zones. They are the most comfortable,Warm and easiest to get off rubber boots i have ever owned. A sock liner and thermal sock i was able to sit in my stand all morning Thursday and never got cold at all.

Cabela's has some great stuff. Hope it stays that way since Bass Pro Shops bought them. I got a pair of their labeled 12x50 binocs at a huge discount that I later found are made by Steiner.

I may change from the Lacrosse I have always bought because they don't last me anywhere near as long as they did in the past.
