It actually works this time. The mistakenly uploaded beta did not.

You hit the nail on the head Ben! The next time onehand needs a pull across a stream, I think I will not pull as hard as I did the last time. Splash! :)

All,

If you own a Mac the beta is now available. For those of you here who were lucky enough to get a copy when we were able to download it from the site Steve found last year, you might want to update.

Hey Guy,
This technocretin needs some help. The download by my iMac running OSX (Tiger) went fine. I got a file named "GoogleEarthMac.dmg"
I clicked on that and my security ran it and I got an ikon that looks like a thin hard drive labeled "Google Earth."
When I click on that I open a file containing the blue-and-white Google Earth Ikon. So far so good?
But I can't get it to open.
Do I need to download something else?
Do I need to open it thru some other application?
Any help appreciated.

That file that contains the Blue&W icon is a disk image. You need to drag the Blue&W icon out of the image so it loads onto your drive. However, it still should have worked. Is your iMac older? Are you online when you do this? In order for the program to work properly it needs a good internet connection. If you have dialup it may not work.

Hi, Guy,
You may have pin-pointed more than one problem:
Mine is a 2000-vintage iMac and I'm on dial-up!

Thanks,
Dave

Sorry, you need a fast internet connection for Google Earth to be of any value. But on my 4mbs comcast cable it is mind boggling. In fact, I'd say this program is so cool that it's a reason to get a fast internet connection.... and maybe even a fast new computer! :)

Seriously - it runs on both Macs and PC's and is worth checking out. The imagery is much higher resolution than you will find on either terraserver or maps.google.com. And the 3d capability with realtime flyovers will give you a competely new perspective on the pine barrens (literally!).

I like terraserver for the absolute clarity, but Google Earth gives me a plus in one respect (other than being more up to date). I was able to find a spring in the middle of a hardwood swamp off Cedar Creek this week. I was drawn to it by the light color on Google Earth, which usually denotes grasses and open country sans trees. I struggled mightily through Smilax rotundifolia (greenbriar) to get to it. Once there, I felt (truly) like I was the only person to have ever been there. I will revisit it in Mid July to look for orchids, though I did not see any evidence from last year.

but if you get a certain zoom the names are not in the proper location, and it even is showing the names of some towns in Virginia in the ocean off the NJ coast. Odd!

That is odd. I just downloaded it on my laptop. It took me a few minutes to get used to the new interface... not sure whether it's an improvment or not. I suppose it's nice to have the controls minimize until you roll over them.

It really is a great tool. Looks like there are some other cool features with KML also: http://earth.google.com/earth4.html

My laptop is right on the cusp of the system requirements now (1.2ghz G4) :)

I'm still waiting for the Mac version of Google Earth Plus :)

Guy, have you had a chance to compare the Mac and Windows versions on your Intel Machine? If so, which one runs faster?

I have not tried that yet. I will try to do that this weekend.

This 4.0 version is a major improvement. I always was disappointed that the outer edges of the map was always blurry before; however, this version eliminates that. And the controls are now at the top right and when you move your mouse away from them they shrink and are less conspicuous. Move your mouse back and they appear. Nice!

I also have not added more ram yet which I should have done, and the previous versions worked poorly because of that. This one is more responsive and seems to work better in ram starved situations.
