I stopped by Buzbys today since Marilyn was out of stock on my CD and needed some more. We got to talking for a while and she told me she had been saving something for me because she thought I might be interested. She had copies of the Batsto gazette from 1966 to the early ninties that she no longer wanted and she offered them to me. That was nice of her.

It is quite a stack. I've gone through some of it and there is alot of interesting content. I will post particuarly interesting content I come across. The older papers have yellowed with age. Bud Wilson was a frequent contributor and there are photos of his excavations.

Guy, Ben, can I scan articles from the gazette to the site with out infringement?

Marilyn had been speaking with Karen Riley and was suggesting some topics for her new book. She relayed some of the info to me, that she had suggested to her.

Apparently the Schiess family had owned much of the land around AppleJack road. It was named so because (as you might expect) applejack was made there. the road used to be lined abundantly with apple trees. During prohibition the feds came in and made them cut every tree down:)

Something else. Hmmmm, maybe I shouldn't mention this on the forum....I'll keep it vague. somewhat recently agents from alcohol, tobacco, and firearms where unable to contact a local piney by phone so they went to his house and were chased off by "a pack of wild dogs". They asked Marilyn what they could do to contact him and she said, "well, I wouldn't go back to his house again" :rofl:They agreed.

Jeff:

Interesting that you should mention the Schiess family. During the nineteenth century, a George Schiess operated a hotel in Cinnaminson Township, Burlington County, where Fork Landing Road and Branch Pike converge. The building is gone now, replaced by a 1920s-era bungalow, but while George was still dispensing adult beverages, the little settlement around the hotel became known as Schiesstown, a place name that has long disappeared from the lexicon of most township residents. I suspect that George was the progenitor of the Schiess family in the Pines as he, his wife, Barbara, and their children were the only people with the surname of Schiess listed in Burlington County during the 1880 federal decennial census.

Best regards,
Jerseyman

P.S. Nice score on the Batsto Citizen’s Gazette. I have a full set in my library and I really enjoy reading the articles in this publication!

Jeff,

In every issue it states that you can freely use the info as long as you give credit to the BCC. It states "All persons are invited to quote from the Gazette. We ask only that credit be given."

When I post scans I add text to it saying it is from them.
