I'm going to say that it's a pine vole. I understand that they are considered pests and are capable of killing a tree-do you see any burrows around any of the other trees on your property?

I'd love to put one of those hunter-type motion detector cams, but I don't have one and I'm not in a position to go out and buy one just for this. Given the guesses of what you guys think it is, do you think they're in the holes most of time or would they be out most of the day, only to return at night? I really don't think it's ants, because I've not seen even one ant by that area as much as I've looked.

If they do it at night the camera would be useless anyway.

Do you have what look like tiny paths, I mean really tiny, around your property. They look like little trails, maybe some bumps on the surface? If you do they are most probably voles, they look like a small mouse, and I doubt you'll ever get to see one live, they like to burrow and tunnel. They use those 'paths', called runs, to get from one place to another,. Take a look around other trees/shrubs for more holes. They live for only several months but, they are prolific little devils and active thru winter. I tried a bunch of things to get rid of them but eventually gave up and just put them out of mind.

If you set it very close to the hole I think the mouse motion would trigger it.
Mine is very sensitive but I haven't targeted mice yet.
Just pulled my chip on my cam this afternoon. Picks up squirrels at 8' very nicely.
