I think your plan is sound; remove the 3D from the menu. I don't use them intentionally.

Yeah, it should all be handled automatically in the near future. Was already finishing up a big update and one feature is a 2d/3d preference. That will default to 2d, so you won't normally see the 3d maps - but they'll be accessible by just clicking the compass and switching to 3d mode. And if you open a link to a 3d map but it's not actually a 3d view, the app will automatically switch to the 2d version. But "real" 3d links will continue to work properly.
Hope to get this update online by the end of the week, there are several other new features.

Just stumbled across this while looking for something else. This is my nightmare scenario... guy starts a website using Mapbox, site goes viral and he receives a $11,000 bill for his use of the API.
I mean, it's a long shot, sure, but not inconceivable. There could be some kind of front-page-story event and a major publication could link to one of my maps, easily exceeding the mapbox 50,000 monthly limit. At least Mapbox hasn't adopted the policy of requiring a credit card on file to automatically bill me (HERE and Google have that requirement).
In the short term, the changes I've made have reduced mapbox usage from about 10,000 loads to around 1,200. But I really need to transition completely away from them. Had quick look at the open source version of their old API and it looks like that might work for me. Will dig deeper into this in the coming months

Was actually surprised, because I thought X wouldn't allow you to even view content without being a member. The same thing was also posted on other (sketchy?) sites, but they were all quoting the Twitter post.

So, here we are almost two years after discontinuing all the HERE maps and permanently closing my developer account.
Today I got this bill for my non-existent account, payable immediately.
Good riddance to these guys, I sent a message using their contact form to just leave me alone. I remember last year, they sent me a notice that the credit card for my non-existent account had expired. Just shows how hard it can be to get away from a company after deleting an account.
