how to buy an old property?

I have a question that I am sure that someone in this forum can assist me with: How would I go about proposing to buy an abandoned/unused property? The property in question is the old boy scouts camp on Naegli Rd (Indian Cabin) in Egg Harbor City. I assume most of you know what I am talking about. Up until less than a year ago, someone lived there. Now, it lies heavilly vandalized, boarded up, broken, and seemingly abandoned. The property is almost exactly what I have been looking for as far as something near the Pines, secluded, large, posesses little to no market value, and has little historical value worth preserving. So, my question would be, how can I find out who owns the property and if it has been abandoned, who might I contact to aquire the land?

Can't speak for Atlantic County specifically, but you can access the web site of most counties and look for the property assessor's link thereon. That should steer you to the information you need. Hopefully you can access the info directly, and if you're lucky, there's no charge for this automated service. If worse comes to worse and this county's site is not that complete, you would need to make a trip to that office personally. But you'll probably have to go down in person unless you have the specific street address or the parcel number.

I'm fortunate to live in Volusia County, Florida, and they have an extremely complete and free site for almost anything you would want to know. You can search by owner, address or parcel number, assuming you know one of them. (Lacking all of those things, a trip would be necessary down to the county tax office to consult the tax maps to obtain the parcel number). Once you track down what you need, it is possible here to bring up a map of subject property (and those nearby) in any one of several scales. Aerial photo? Sure. Show sales for recent years? Of course.

Wish you luck there in Atlantic County, and I'm pretty sure you'll get most of what you're looking for. Go for it!

Forgot to mention that once you have determined the parcel number (or possibly they refer to it as lot and block numbers), the tax office will have the name and address of the owner(s) on file, and you should be able to take it from there. A local owner would hopefully be listed in the phone directory, or if not local, there is the "Switchboard.com" site on the internet for that information. And in a real pinch, a local realtor's office might be of some help.

As mentioned above I have gotten names and phone numbers from Egg Harbor City's tax office before. I had the street address and they gave me everything else. I wonder if the city owns it now as they have been planning to do a bunch of redevelopment out by the lake for the last few years, at least they have been discussing it in council meetings.

Bob,
I was referencing back to aserdaten had said. It made sense to me when I wrote it but I guess I could word it so it's a little easier to understand. My point was that I have gotten that info form EHC's tax office. Sorry for the confusion.

No worries mate. Sometimes I dig too deep into things. If they don't make sense in my head I go digging instead of just moving on.
